What type of press
« on: October 25, 2008, 08:43:03 AM »
Been loading on a single stage press for all my loads now thinking
of a change.
How dependable are the progressive presses heard pros and cons on these
type of systems.
Many say you are better off to stay with the single stage.....

I've always loaded on a single stage as well, but judging from what I've heard from friends-go big or stay on the porch and by that I mean buy a Dillon.  Nothing else compares from what I've heard.

I really like my Dillon 550.  I don't think you can go wrong with one.  I have considered getting a 650 though.

I load everything on the 550.  I use it as a single stage when necessary as well.

I posted a link to a used 650 that was listed on craigslist not long ago.

I stepped up from a RCBS Jr3 press to a Dillion 550, and i wonder how come i didn't do it sooner. there is a little learning curve but 10-20 min later i was cranking out ammo around 350 rounds per hour of .45 acp my first time using it. I have also used it as a single stage to do 30-06, .243, .223

There is one problem with any progressive press, it causes you to get other tools to help ease and speed up the process i.e. gracey trimmer, extra tool heads, primer tubes, chargemaster 1500, it also causes you to buy componets in bulk. ;D

Get the 650 Nomad. It's a true progressive press as it indexes automatically. Yes the caliber conversions are more expensive but in the grand scheme of things it's a minuscule cost.

Damn Spiff for making me want to order one >:(

The 650's case feeder handles rifle cases to. The 550's does not.

There is also a bullet feeder made by an after market company that fits the 650 and 1050. It might also fit the 550 to. I can't remember and I'm to lazy to check. It was however spendy, right around $450 I think. RG, LP and I looked at it at the last shot show in Vegas. I was going to get one, but then I bought another pistol, then a rifle, then a shotgun, then another shotgun..............................

If you want to check out a 550 let Dad know the next time you are in town and come check ours out . If money was no object I would own a Square deal for handgun stuff and a 550 for rifle . Frankly I wish they made a .223 conversion for the square deal and then I would just own it and my Rockchucker .

People still knock me for using an RCBS Rock Chucker for 9mm, but I think its just fine. If I make 500 rounds an hour instead of 100, I would probably just end up going through ammo much faster.

But if you do go progressive, Dillon is the only way to go.

The 550 is NOT a progressive in the true sense. It's manual indexed.

It's fast and after I have loaded on a Hornady single Stage, and a Lee Pro 1000, I finally graduated to the Dillon 550. All I can say is I would have been further along to just started with the 550... why did I wait so long???? Stupid, stupid, stupid... :stick:

Other brands are good, but nothing like the dillon...

Here is a 550 for $350 on ksl classifies with .40 dies, no tax.  If the press interests you you could offer $250 and see what happens.  I buy quite a bit from this site, I just offer what I'm willing to pay....  This is in the Salt Lake area, but i you have cash and you are patient you can find a steal..
