Nice looking ride SM.  Is it running or do you need to rebuild the motor?

it supposedly runs.  we couldn't get it started yesterday though.  i think the starter solenoid is bad.  i'll tinker with it today after work and see what happens.  we also sliced the lower radiator hose just before we got it back to my place lastnight so i'll have to replace that, and then go from there.

i'll drive it like it is for a while.  I've got a Big Block 429 and C6 trans from my '71 cougar(too far gone to restore) that i'm building to stuff under the hood.

I'm so stoked right now!!  i've been looking, and trying to afford one of these since i was in High school.

Sweet... a 429 will make that a nice ride for sure.  My next project is going to be a big block Mopar.  I'm looking for an early 70's vintage Duster, Dart or similar A body car to shoe horn a 440 into.

Yes!! It's true!!

I turned wrenches for 17 years, now all I want to do is drive the damn things. Heck, I even let Sears or Minute Lube change my oil and do the lubing!!

Good riddance to a very messy job....

Well I do have to admit that I take my vehicles in for oil changes as well.  It's been years since I wrenched on a car other than for minor stuff like tune ups or to change a belt.  Hell my next door neighbor is trying to swap out a tranny on his Chevy pickup in his driveway thinking he was going to save himself an easy $500.  Now he's wishing he had just let a shop do it instead.  I helped him for about 2 hours yesterday, told him what he needed to do to finish getting the old one out and called it a day.  My days of doing something that silly are long gone.  But then again that's why I want an older car for my project.  They are much easier to work on than these newer cars.

SHE RUNS!!!

got it running lastnight.  it won't quite keep itself running though but i think a slight idle screw adjustment will fix that.

she needs a new lower radiator hose, (the chains sliced the current one on the way home) the radiator filled back up, and all the other fluids topped off, the carb adjusted and i think i'll be able to take her for spin around the block.

Hey Spiff,

do you know where i might find some casting numbers on my engine to figure out for sure what the hell it is?

pulled the starter and looked at the block there but all i can find is what i'm assuming to be a date code.  all it says is 2K3.

anywhere else i can look?

thanks

Can't be much help here. Most engines have a flat machined somewhere that has the serial number stamped on it. I don't think casting marks will help, you'll need to locate an actual serial number.......Google maybe?

Does it have the 289 or 390 in it?

that's the problem, I don't know.

the guy i bought it from told me that someone else told him that it had a non-original 260.

I want to find out for sure.

Udate:  got her running well enough to take her for a quick spin around the block.  she still needs some TLC before she'll be dependable but i'm getting there.  also swapped out the old weathered tires for the ones from my '71.  here's a couple pics.

Old tires and wheels:

the ones from my other Cougar:

I'm sure there's a number on the block for you to check.  On the small block chevy it's back where near the bell housing.  I'll do some searching in a bit and see if I can find where the small block ford is located.

BTW, you know I'm totally jealous.

Here you go.  One google search and maybe 3 minutes spent on it.  Your google-fu is weak.  ;)

Ford Engine Numbers

Ford Head Cating Numbers

More Ford Numbers - check page 2

Hope you can find what you need in there.

Thanks Jeff,  I had found the first two sites but not the third. (of which is a great site BTW)  my problem is that every place I've found to look for #s on the block has turned up nothing but a date code #.  I'm thinking i may just have to pull a head.  although i did find a # on the intake manifold that i need to search and see what comes up.

Man, the more i dig into this car, the more of STEAL i realize it was.

Emptied the trunk of all the spare parts, and took out the factory plaid trunk mat and the trunk is SOLID!!  I was a bit worried that the mat was retaining some moisture and would be rusting out the trunk.  nope!!  I even found what i'm assuming to be the factory jack, tire iron, and lug wrench. ;)

did i mention that there isn't one crack, chipped or broken piece of glass, the little triangle rear windows roll down, and it's got wing windows that work too.

just helping Jeff's jealousy.  ;D
