BOB's and other gear
« on: March 22, 2007, 08:36:58 AM »
So what's everyone doing for preparedness?  Who's packing a BOB in their car on a daily basis?  What's your 1st, 2nd and possibly 3rd line of gear?  What's your plan to bug out if the need arises, no need to give out specific locations, I'm just curious who's going to bunker themselves versus those that think bugging out with everyone else is the way to go?

Personally I'm bunkering in.  What I don't have I'll aquire through superior firepower and overwhelming tactics and charm if need be.   ;D

Bugging out!

Got a brother with a ranch in a remote area of MT.

One tank of gas and three five gallons of gas. I have everything always ready to throw into the Suburban.

If a true SHTF you guys can rumage threw my house. ;)

I'd be bugging out.

I carry a BOB/GHB with me every day.  I've got more supplies in my truck as well.  should the SHTF, i'd be bugging home to load up, then bugging out to my BOL.

Not sure what I'd do. Depends on the situation. I have a brother in law on the other side of Caldwell, but he's by no means out and away from everyone. It's farm country and he has a well. One small and one big plus. I'd probably bug in, unless it really appears to be a major long term SHTF. If it's major, water becomes a big "if", so we would be better off where there is a well. Someone can stock tons of food. Water is another thing entirely.

Can you drill wells in town?

Once I've bugged out have at it...but if I'm still here make sure you remember the secret handshake.  ;D

I carry a BOB everyday which has enough crap for me to:  Get home, get to a safe location or live for a few days while figuring out what the hell I should do next.

A single guy can bug out with a 30 pack and live forever.

Add a wife and you be carrying a large pack and she will have a 30 lb pack.

Add three kids with two of them girls and Bugging out becomes a Suburban and a 6x10 trailer.

My next question is this.  How far do you think you need to bug out away from the big city and why?

My concerns would be this.  If I had a bug out place far outside of town and the SHTF, am I going to have to fend off others that may stumble across my place and will I be able to adequitely fend them off if their numbers far exceed mine, (I'm sure we're not the only guys with guns out there)?

If I stay home and bunker in I'm already one step ahead of the game because I'm already there so anyone coming will be there after me.  I can stock pile as much supplies as my funds will allow, I can raid neighbors pools or even walk 2 blocks to Indian Creek for water, (one of the reasons I chose to live where I do) if for some reason the city lines shut down (I'm in Kuna mind you).  I'm far enough away from the big city that looters should not be a problem for quite some time and I live on a cul-de-sac which means there's only one way for them to drive in and out of my neighborhood so my street is more easily defendable if I need to form a blockade with my neighbors (strength in numbers).

What's your back up plan if you can't Bug out?  I know some of you are getting into the ham radio thing to keep coms up and that's a great idea, I'm wondering how clutered the air waves are going to be if the SHTF and everybody is jumping on the air?  Are you guys focusing on 2 meter radios or going for something bigger?

the airwaves are not going to be cluttered at all. Most people don't have anything that will transmit on those freqs.  About 90% of people in general will lose their head if the cell phone networks crash.

When short wave radios are switched from recreational usage to full time communications it may be different.  Even if only 10% of the population has short wave, that's a hell of a lot of radio chatter.

but the likely numbers is about .5% of the public with shortwave.  No where near 10%

so, what freq are WE gonna use?  Assuming all the repeaters are down?  I'm sure the RACES guys will have a couple of mobile repeaters set up but they will be for .gov use only, and they will take over the permanent repeaters also in the event of an emergency.

I agree with I_G_N. If you begin moving around you loose the defensive tactical advantage of fighting, I mean negotiating with our well meaning predatorial and sociopathic fellow citizens. Man has it been a rough week!  Anyway, If you hunker down then you are at least able to retain all of your supplies and anything else which might be needed and not considered in a BOB. But my BOBs would be packed as well. If things get really weird, multiple families could defend one residence and provide better security as well.

I carry a BOB in my car or Suburban at all times.  I consider it more of a get back to the wife and kids bag than anything else.  I've basically just got a Camelback HAWG, with water, MRE's, jacket, toiletries, first-aid kit, Glock 20 with 2 extra 17 round magazines, flashlight, and various other things.  Most of the time I have my handheld ham radio also.

I have thought about what I would do and to tell you the truth, I don't know.  After watching the long lines on the freeway after Katrina, in that regard it may be better just to stay put.  Can you imaging what it would be like around here?  I have a hard enough time getting home after work, let alone if there was a disaster! :o

Traffic here at its worst is a good day in other places, LA and DC ( lived in both places). So while the lines may seem long here they do move and you get home within the hour.

On 911 it took me 3 1/2 hours to get home, 45 miles. I always carried a detailed map of the city and was able to choose a route that kept me away from other targets and away from population dense areas. And I was always moving and getting closer to home.

Know what other routes to use to get home, drive them once in  a while. Even here you have major side rodes that will get you across town with minimal delay ( West and East). Like Amity into Nampa to the south or Floating Feather into Star.
I can always use Kuna-Mora and Black Creek and the Oregon Trail to get to my house.

Bugging in sounds great, If you have the right neighborhood and social structure to do it. But if water, electricity and waste disposal, roaming crowds of zombies are not a problem. You and your small families can not be on guard 24/7 and do the things you need to plan ahead and survive.

Having a BOL is prudent planning. I am lucky to have a brother that lives in a remote MT town and we have worked out and planned for me living there if it gets real bad. Two families to work/defend and what not.

Of course having a Jericho, TEOTWAWKI, event occur is remote how will you survive that? What if Boise is hit with a small nuke or a bio weapon. You would want to get out of dodge quick. While you may not live, you might, and if you don't have a plan to live outside of the area, you will become part of the zombie hoards on the road.

So don't put all your eggs in one basket and say I'm bugging in and calling that good. What if that is not a choice?

I have a trailer with clothing ( by kid with furture sizes), food ( non-hybrid seeds also), weapons, fishing, gas, oil, etc, camping supplies in plastic bins ready to load and go within the half hour. Wife and kids can load it up and go. We can make it to our BOL with in eight to ten hours by multiple routes, a couple of them using dirt roads thru the mountains.

So continue your preps but don't prep to a certain level and call it good and relax. That is when Murphy will prove to you he is alive and well and bite you in the ass!
