How many times can the same round be chambered?
« on: September 25, 2008, 09:22:21 AM »
I have wondered this for a while now so I thought I'd ask.  I always unload my carry gun at night before putting it in the safe.  Since I always carry with a round in the pipe, I remove the mag, eject the round, and put it back in the mag.  The round that was chambered has slight scoring from the barrel rifling.  Is it unsafe or unreliable/inaccurate to re-chamber the same round multiple times, each time creating new scoring on the jacket?  I'll typically rotate it out for a fresh one if I think it's been chambered too many times, but where is that threshold?

Would that because you live in a fortified house and Bad Guys ( or LEO's with the wrong address) can not get into your house?

You will eventually loosen the bullet and it will either fall out or fall back and it because of the scoring it will be less accurate (still good enough for up close and personal)

But the bullet will come loose eventually and that could cause a problem.

Why unload? I just place mine on the head board.

I carry a different gun than I would use at home. I also have two small kids so, although they know the rules, anything not on my person goes in the safe. Thanks for the info, NGO, that's kinda what I'm looking for.

First why take the bullet out of the chamber if you lock it up.
Next take the bullets out of the mag and rotate the bullets.
Weapons stored in a safe or out of the safe are always loaded
or so training has taught us all guns are loaded..
Five sons and not once did they touch a loaded weapon in our house
They were raised as all are loaded and don't touch but were out of reach
we lived many years out of town and no neighbors so we always kept a loaded
weapon at the reach as needed...

It depends, every gun and line of ammunition is different.  With my Sig P229 and Golden Saber 165 grain ammunition I chambered the same round by locking the slide and releasing it 150 times and measured only a .001 difference in OAL.  My Springfield XD 45 ACP had no measurable difference in OAL after 40 (I got bored).

If you reload you can also make a dummy load and do the test with it, if you do it with live ammunition make sure you have a safe backstop, I did it at the range.

Other people have reported visible OAL changes after as few as 10 times into the chamber.   If you chamber / clear each day you should try to rotate the ammunition or shoot the round after x number of times.

I rotate carry ammo every 3-4 months and the only times I unload is for cleaning, dry fire practice or live fire at the range.  I store my carry gun in a Gunvault at night.

I usually can chamber a 9mm up to 10 or 15 times before I add it to my plinking ammo and put a new round into the chamber. Remember that you should always be carrying FULL capacity, if 15+1 is the case. Otherwise in a shoot the investigation will flip your life upside-down looking for the extra round that was never there.
