British 5.56x45 mm.
« on: March 13, 2007, 01:46:29 PM »
Just before the price increase on everything I bought 500 rds. of British 5.56x45 62 grain surplus ammo. After receiving it I found out it has a steel core. I heard  rumors that it is hard on non chrome lined  barrels. My AR does not have a chrome lined barrel. I haven't shot any of it yet because of the rumor. Is this ammo safe to fire? I know surplus ammo is not very accurate but wanted some plinking stuff.
The headstamp is RORG 92 with a Nato circle and cross. Necks look to be annealed.

I don't see how it would hurt.  the bullet is copper jacketed.  no steel should even touch your bore.  I'm just thinking out loud here.

one of the other guys may know more about this than me.

I would think it would boil down to how thick the copper jacket is. But I can't imagine that the Brits would issue ammo to their troops that would result in steel to steel contact inside the barrel. If it really is miltary surplus, I'll bet it's fine.

Even the steel jacketed stuff is softer than the steel in your bbl.

If you don't want it...you could always give it to me for quick disposal ;D

Let me take that bad ammo off your hands.  I'll trade you some Wolf for it.   ;D
