I must comment on the guys coolness, but, I think most anyone else would have lit that guy up.  You know the funny thing is my wife an I were talking about heading up to Table Rock this weekend.   :o   I imagine of that fellow had a wife and child there with him, I think someone would have gone to the morgue.
To see whats right and not to do it is a want of courage.

Glad you are alright Saint, good job!

I am concerned about the comments that what was done was the right thing. I know that hind sight is 20/20 and that now we know the gun was a fake, that not shooting him was a good thing.

BUT... we have now set a precedence in the Boise Valley for all concealed weapon holders that if we are to draw our gun on a target that is threatening us with a gun, that we should NOT shoot until we can ascertain weather or not the perp is drunk and playing with us or real and going to shoot us.

I think this also sets a bad standard for the LEO's, that they are going to be compared to this incident and be asked to show that kind of restraint when dealing with a "deadly" force situation.

Imagine if a cop had pulled over this idiot, and the idiot got that gun out? Would we be having discussions about how stupid this kid was for doing it? Or would the press be all over a cop shooting a unarmed man?

I think that anyone with training would have stopped the threat with their weapon as soon as it was possible, and not let it go as long or as far as it did. I think its a mental mindset, that you have to be ready for action, not only with your weapon of choice, but with your mind.

Brian, I agree with you when looking at this with the information posted here.  However, as Saint posted on the other forum (link above) he stated that he couldn't clear the back ground and was in his car and couldn't draw right away.  He made a judgment call that worked out OK in the end.

I've had weapons (not toys) pointed at me more than once and drawn my weapon in response more than once and haven't fired a shot either.  Sometimes that is the right call.  I'm sorry but I see no precedence set here.

FWIW, Saint was open carrying.

Jeff,

Fair enough, just posting my thoughts and observations.

I thought from Saint's post that he was conceal carrying, because he drew from his IWB holster??

Doh!  My reading comprehension sucks.  He did say he was using an IWB holster.  Sorry about that.  Even though he posted on the open carry forum it does look like he was carrying concealed.  Not that I think that it changes anything.  ;)

I think that anyone with training would have stopped the threat...

Is that fact or assumption? Has Saint had training?

The overwhelming lesson I learn from this is if I want to be second guessed regarding a decision to run, draw or shoot I shouldn't post my experience on the internet.

I'll freely admit I've never had to draw on anyone. How many people second guessing Saint in this thread have had to?

Even if you have, how do you make a judgment based on a few paragraphs of data and a lot of imagination?

BG in jail , Saint still alive , sounds like he did alright  ;)

The only 2 things about the situation that scared me when I read this were 1. When he described disarming the BG . I envisioned him being well within striking distance without backup and 2. The BG getting back in his vehicle , which I consider a much more dangerous weapon than even a handgun .

I on the other hand wasn't there and having had a gun pointed at me in my lifetime I can tell you it jacks you full of adrenaline so your decision making capabilities may not be in top form .

In the end I was impressed at how well he kept his composure and that everyone including the BG went home safe . Had he shot someone posessing only a BB gun he would have faced the wrath of the general public and the legal system as well as having to live with some level of guilt for the rest of his life . Right , Wrong or indifferent we are taught not to kill from a very young age and even if it seems justifiable from our Monday morning , armchair QB spots Saint would have had to live with the consequences .

Good Job Saint !! Lets hope you never have to do it again .

I've had my CWP since age 21 and am now 38. In 17 years of carrying I've only found myself in this situation once and didn't shoot either and have no regrets about that decision.  Saint, you did great.  Michael N, I disagree with you on one point, being pumped full of adrenaline improves your decision making ability, it is a natural fight or flight response that developed over millenia.  When the decision goes to fight vs. flight is when training kicks in and responses become reflexive.  Saint did an excellent job of assessing the situation and determining the appropriate response based on the threat-I don't want to play poker with Saint as I tend to bluff and he apparently reads them well.  I agree with you that I don't think I would have allowed the perp to get in his vehicle , I think he'd have been better off to hold him at gun point until the authorities arrived.  Who's sig line is that says "When seconds count the police are minutes away"?
