This is a sad day for all of Idaho
« on: August 20, 2008, 01:38:46 PM »
I don't know how many of you knew him, it doesn't really matter if you did or not. This is a loss for all of us, especially the young folks who did not get to know him. Idaho loses a hero today!

His exploits in the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam were featured in a book and on film, and for his heroism, he was awarded the nation's higest honor.

This morning, Major Ed Freeman, known as "Too Tall," passed away at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Freeman was a helicopter pilot, who flew multiple missions under heavy enemy fire to re-supply the 7th Cavalry in the Ia Drang Valley, and evacuate wounded troopers.

The 1965 battle was the subject of the book "We Were Soldiers Once, and Young" by Lt. Gen. Hal Moore, and the Mel Gibson movie adaptation, "We Were Soldiers."

Freeman was awarded the Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush in July of 2001.

According to Jim Adams, administrative support manager with the Idaho Department of Veterans Affairs, Freeman will be buried in the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, but at this time, it's not known when the funeral or burial ceremony will be held.

Ed Freeman was 80 years old.

Damn!  I didn't know Too Tall lived here.  I wish I had a chance to talk to him.  RIP Warrior.
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

My wife knew him personally and was very fond of him, and a gal that I used to work with lived right next to him.

The gal I worked with thought the world of him to. She was/is pretty liberal and Maj. Freeman was pretty conservative. She said they used to have the best arguments. When he was awarded his CMH she wrote a damn good article (for the Statesman) praising him.

That's too bad.

I would say it is a loss for our whole country.

What an honor it would have been to know him.

I met him at one of the Governor's prayer breakfasts a few years back. He seemed like an ok guy. I figure in Ia drang he was either crazy or more likely a MAN among men. Hope he was right with God.
