I have seen those pics before and always serves as a stiff reminder to check my bore when I'm out crawling around hunting.

i'll bet money that those sections of barrel did not get peeled back like that from shooting the boresight.  i'll bet someone pulled them back.

There has been speculation that this was rigged somehow.  Maybe the barrel was just defective and the boresight did cause it.  I doubt we will ever know for sure.  I do know for sure is that you don't want any obstruction in the barrel when you fire the weapon.

That thing in the last picture was stuck in the end of the barrel when the guy fired the rifle.

It's a boresighter...basically the lazy way to zero in a rifle...I mean you can use it for other things but that is basically it...

The story is that he forgot to take it out and then did a test shot.  :D

I have seen a similar results on another rifle that belonged to a coworker of mine.  Story was that he fell in and occluded the barrel with snow and shortly after took a shot at a bull elk.  The barrel was split into 3 equal sized petals and flared just like the one in these pics.  He made a lamp out of it.  It was pretty cool, but costly.

I've always been too cheap or poor depending on your perspective to buy a laser boresighter.  I just pull the bolt or bolt carrier assembly and look down the bore at a target set up in my yard.  Always gets me on the paper the first shot.

This is why, IF I ever get a laser bore-sight, it will be the chamber variety.  No way I'm putting anything in my muzzle with live ammunition nearby.

For those of you that hunt with firearms, a  brightly colored kids balloon over the end of the barrel is good insurance against obstructions. Keeps snow and debris out, if you inadvertantly punch the bore into the dirt, the balloon tears and slides back or off and gives you an instant check as to the possibility of instruction.

Save you cash and follow fj40mojo's advice. I use a screw on a light switch if I can't get a little distance. I've also picked a point on the eve of a distant structure for a reference point. An old Luck Strikes pack is a bit more traditional and nostalgic...

The little water balloons stretched tightly over the muzzle of a .22 with subsonic ammo makes for a decent silencer too!
