I believe that both SM (HP) and OB (Micron) have heard rumors.

I'd say HP is a pretty good bet for layoffs. There are reorganizations going on that will undoubtedly lead to job cuts. How many end up changing jobs in the company as opposed to loosing employment entirely is anyones guess. What I've seen in the past three years of layoffs is many people find other jobs in HP before their last day so they end up not being out of work for even a day.

Let's hope that trend continues.

should be at least another 3 or 4k laid off from Micron in the next year or so.  Including me and JR.  Micron is dumping all their money into China, just as other companies are bringing their crap back from overseas due to high shipping costs.  Figures Micron to be back-ass-wards.  I hear the meat packing place may be starting up soon though.

Don't feel bad guys , they are looking at 40-50% unemployment in construction trades by next spring . Hopefully Washington and Oregon are still booming when I get laid off .

I heard that HP will be closing the Boise plant and moving some of it elsewhere.  I doubt that will happen but you never know.
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

What dept are you in?  I was (past tense) in the tool and die shop.  I got caught in the first round 1 year ago July.  Half way thru nursing school now.

Yup, all is doom and gloom for most of The 'Cron.  My specific area is going ok though, but it's hard to say if it will last.

I have been out for about four months now, Union Electrical work went to crap!  Had to find another job locally and got lucky with almost the same pay selling FA/Security systems for local company.  Union is predicting next summer at the earliest for work to pick back up here in the valley.  Just got to ride it out I guess, hope you all can stay employed!  I had to cut into my retirement to make a house payment, got behind and could not get back ahead.

I used to work for your Grand dad. I've always thought fondly of him and the times I worked for him. Hopefully things will pick up. But after all of those years with Greenspan jacking the economy around has come due. And after the credit card bust that's coming we'll get back on track.

I haven't heard anything like that. That's a little out there. 99.99% chance the office space is staying. People are actually being asked to move here from other offices but even those other offices aren't closing. Data center closure is old news. There is very little manufacturing (what might be termed a "plant") here anymore. That might be the source of the rumor but like I said, I haven't heard anything about it going away.

in 2005 i got into Corrections, there are never any lay offs because Idaho will need their prisons no matter what.
people quit all the time, i dont see why, we have the most job security you can have and is an easy job..

all they did to us was quit paying out overtime.  we now get comp time, for every 4 hours we work we get 4 hours off when we need it.  if you have any acccrued comp time on the books, it gets payed out right before christmas. so i am working as much ot as i can to get the comp hours up for a HUGE paycheck to buy christmas.

I'd be interested in working the infirmary. Are health care people out there state employees as well?

I wonder if I know you out here.  I started in 2006 and I'm still here.  That's the good thing about working in Corrections.  Job security beacuse there will never be a lack of dumb people in the state that need to be locked up and babysat.

As for medical services and facility services, let me check the job announcements and see if there is anything or you can check http://www.dhr.idaho.gov/StateJobs/tabid/970/Default.aspx and see if there are any jobs there that are of interest.

Again, let me check the boards and see if there is anything open but I do know that our Contract Medical Service are always looking for people.
