hike up to B-52 lake
« on: August 10, 2008, 11:02:58 AM »
A while ago there was a thread that talked about hiking up to a lake where a B-52 had crashed and they just left the aircraft, I want to hike up and check it out.

Anyone done this hike ? Where is it ? Is it a day hike or overnighter, easy / hard trail ?

that would be cool. is the fishing anygood up there?

I googled it and it looks like there is road that runs right up to the lake, pretty much take all the fun outta that. I might have to head up to REI and see if anyone there knows more about up there.

If you're just looking for a sweet mountain lake to hike into and do some fishing there are a ton of lakes up there that I've explored over the last few years.  If you'd like I can PM you some names of lakes and some other info.

Just cause I'm a PITA about accuracy in weapons systems descriptions, the plane was a B25.

Should be up in the 'Seafoam area off of ID 21 IIRC.

I stumbled across the trailhead on the way up to a lake in the area. I think you pass an old ghost town (wagon town) on the way up...

Not hard to get to the trailhead...their is a memorial near the start of the trail IIRC.

No such plane as a "B-23"...probably a B-25.

Whats left of an F4 Phantom is scattered along one of the hills in the Blacks Creek riding area that is east of I-84 and south of Arrowrock Dam. We'd heard about it, but actually stumbled upon it by accident about 15 or 16 years ago while riding dirt bikes. There's bits and pieces of wings, fuselage, landing gear and engine still up there. We heard the pilot punched out in time.

Just a FYI.

Here is an interesting article about the crash as well as an Aircraft Archaeological Survey of it.

Nope.  B-23 Dragon.  Similar to the DC-3.  First flew in 1939.  Never saw combat.
