Neck Run Out
« on: March 08, 2007, 05:24:58 PM »
When I was loading up some new brass ( Winchester), I noticed that the necks had alot of run out. I measured before and after running through the dies. It didn't seem to change. Will they straighten out by fire forming to the chamber? Should I look for better brass? Like Norma or Lapua? What about Nosler?

Winchester is considered standard quality, I use Remington myself.....unless you are shooting fly turds off mouse nuts.  you could get a neck turner

Right, neck turning, while making tension consistent all around, can actually decrease the tension on the bullet (there's less metal). Not a good thing with a gas rifle.

Thanks Luckypunk for the research. I just checked brass prices at Sportsmans Whse for 223. They are proud of the rem and win. brass. I've been thinking about the once fired stuff on line, but still thinking.

Does anyone have opinions on once fired LC brass from Cheyenne Brass. I may order 1k for $70 from them. I don't know s&h yet. I am guessing I'll have to swage the primer pockets.

One thing about getting crimped brass, even though you have to remove the crimp, you always know that it really is only once fired. You never really know about commercial brass that someone is selling as "once fired".

Shoot the Winchester stuff and don't worry, it is excellent brass.
Don't waste your money on Lapua...way overpriced IMHO.

Get the LC stuff..it is good brass...

Don't worry about neck turning unless you are a benchrester. Too many other variables to worry about.
