Garden Valley Range
« on: August 02, 2008, 09:39:42 PM »
I took my family up to Garden Valley for a picnic and a bit of shooting.  I graduated from Garden Valley H.S. and used to use the range up there by the ranger station all the time.  They've made some serious improvements to the place and it's a great place to shoot - even with some of the tables covered.  When we first drove by, there was one guy shooting.  We went up the road and ate our picnic lunch and then went back and shot for about 90 minutes +/-.  When we were packing up to leave three more guys showed up.  Other than that, we were all alone.  It was great.

Fired off several rounds of my 9mm, as well as my boy's .22.

For myself, I picked up a circa 1966-68 Marlin Model 99 M1 .22 caliber at Boise gun yesterday.  It's essentially the model 60 with a shorter barrel and a stock to make it look like an old m-1 carbine.  Pretty cool, and an absolute blast to shoot (no pun intended).  I'd never seen one before and did a bit of research on it before I bought it.  It's in great shape.  I'd been looking for a little .22 plinker rifle and am glad I found this one.  For those of you who've never seen one - http://www.firearm-gun.com/Gallery/update121407/album/Marlin%20Model%2099%20M1%20.22%20carbine/index.html

Also took up my model 1917 Winchester/Enfield 30-06 and fired off a few rounds.  My wife loves shooting it as well, and was hitting pretty well.  Heavy beast of a rifle, but extremely accurate.

Was a good family Saturday.

Kewl 22 - I didn't even know they had a range up there. Most of those guys just shoot off their front porch.

Did you happen to know the Browns up there? He was/is a saddle maker. And as a family they used to play music a lot. Played with them back in the 70s a few times. Another old pard of mine that had an electrical business there was Mike Tinkham - he's still there but I don't think he is working anymore.

Shoot - last time I was there was in 75 or 76 when I rode from Round Valley over the top to Boiling Springs and then down to the old road into Idaho City. Had three horses and no keys. I was a happy man - - - still am a happy man - but those were the days when you could ride all over th eplace on a horse and no one bothered you.

I used to shoot of the front porch when I lived there.  ;)  Used to have fool hens that would come right up to the house.  Made it easy.  The range has been there at least since 1979 when I first moved up there.

Yah, I knew the Browns.  They didn't live too far from where I lived.

That's one heck of a ride!

My ride actually started up on Smith Creek in Big Creek. North of Yellowpine. I was packing for the Flying W, Edwards Ranch, up there. Picked up a pack horse I had traded for part way out in Cascade and then came through your neck of the woods. Beautiful ride. Took me a few days but well worth it. I spent that year on horseback and most of the next year the same way.
