We can media blast and black oxide it.  It just depends on what you're looking for.

ETA - what is the barrel on/for?  Just curious.

Its for a RRA 16" varmint.

I don't like the bling factor. this will be my main coyote/varmint gun so the less shiny the better

So do you just need the barrel "blackened?"  If so - that should actually be pretty easy.  I will have to look at it - but I know it would be $100 or less.  (most likely less - but I don't like to promise anything until I know for sure.

Since you are just doing the barrel you can use Alumahyde.  I did one of my barrels (using Alumahyde II in dark parkerized) and it's holding up fine.  I did put it in the oven at about 100 degrees for a while to speed up the cure.  It got a little hot and the color changed slightly towards OD and it turns out that with the green furniture that I like it a lot.  The only area of concern is the .750 section where the gas block sits.  If it's too thick it can cause problems.  But that's easily fixed with some emory cloth.  It was easy and cheap.  Maybe $15.  And you can get it in black if you want.

I just threw up in my mouth...   :'(

I suppose you could get a can of Krylon or BBQ paint as well... but if you want it done right - black oxide is the way to go and it won't change the thickness of the material...

Just my thoughts...

I agree there are better things out there.  But if it's just to de-bling a barrel then your options are as open as you want them to be.

Krylon doesn't stand up at all.  Oils and cleaners will strip it right off.  At least Alumahyde is reasonably durable.  Personally, if I thought it was a big deal I'd Duracoat it myself.  For about $25 you can do it yourself if you can talk the wife into letting you cure it in the oven.

BTW, I tend to consider firearms tools and not works of art.  So, consider that in any of my responses.  ;)  BTW, that doesn't mean I treat them like shit or want them looking that way either.

how durable is black oxide?  I want something that is gonna last and not require reapplication, at least for a long time.

I have thought about applying duracoat or something like it myself but thought after how my krylon job on my AK turned out i might want someone professional to do it, or at least someone who knows what they are doing.

I am looking at getting it done from RB precision when I order the rifle but it adds 2-3 weeks extra time on top of the 6 weeks i was quoted for them to get the rifle.  Even though I'm outta country right now it would be nice to have the rifle waiting for me when i get home, as i am missing all the little whistle piggies

I will also be changing out the gas block to a low profile one so i can put on a rifle length FF hand guard

Black Oxide is bluing - pretty much an industry standard application - and thus will last quite some time.  As with anything, it can scratch, but it won't peel, flake, or anything else like that.

I will take some pictures of my rifle barrel that I just had oxided.  It really looks great.

Shoot me an email and we can work out all the details to make sure your rifle is ready when you get home.
