6-284, 6.5-284, 243AI ???
« on: February 09, 2012, 09:52:40 PM »
Picked up a new/barely used gun tonight, savage-stevens .243.  I have wanted one for awhile now to build a gun from.  Any one around here have a 6-284, 6.5-284 or AI 243?  Any advise on barrels, or which caliber pros or cons.  I have a bolt .223 for varmint use, use of this gun would be for punching paper, i would like to do more long range paper punching, maybe out to 700 or 800 yards???  And maybe occasional coyote, or possible use for deer if i decide to take instead of the .270??  What i'm thinking right now is 6-284, just cause i want a blazing fast 6mm, bull barrel (krieger, lilja, etc...) light trigger (i have rifle basix on my 223 and like it)  any recommends for savage trigger? and thinking about building a stock, or trying...  and top off with vortex scope...
Any local input?
Thanks,
Mike

My choice for the 6mm bullet would be the 6mm Crusader loaded with the 115 Dtacs, this would be a laser beam out to 800. Guys are reporting speeds in excess of 3200 FPS using the slower Retumbo powder giving them good barrel life.

My choice for the 6.5mm bullet is the .260 Rem, for paper punching maybe out to 700 or 800 yards and maybe occasional coyote, or possible use for deer the 260 will exceed your expectations without breaking the bank. Brass and factory loads and prechambered barrels for the Savage are readily available.

Info on the Creedmoor a cartridge very similar to the .260: http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-creedmoor-260-done-right/

you might look into a 6.5mm build.

I agree. You are talking about a barrel switch anyways, may as well step up to the better BC and better range of bullet weights.
