Need advice on 10/22 barrel
« on: February 01, 2012, 08:38:07 PM »
So finally drug myself into Hawktech, Dan and Evan were awesome and super helpful as everyone said they would be. Think I'm getting things figured out as far as platform, trigger, optic, etc. But barrel has got me flabbergasted. They have the PWS and Volquartsen. But also of consideration is Green Mountain, Kidd, Lilja, Shilen, and a bunch of others I can't think of at the moment.

My criteria is indestructible, eats anything, and will snipe an empty shotgun shell at 50 yds. I read heavy is better for bench shooting and lighter is better for handheld, but in my mind it should be the opposite way around. Thinking stainless so that I don't have to worry about the chrome moly rusting?

Also, what the crap is all this about bedding the action, floating the barrel, blah blah blah? Does any of that worth the effort or is it just people pretending to act like they know something?

As always, THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND ADVICE.

I kept going round in circles w/this too.  Green Mtn isn't in the same ballpark as some of the other barrels listed.

I couldn't decide between the Kidd and TacSol.  Went with the TacSol SBX barrel for light weight and length w/suppressor.

If all you what is indestructible, eats anything, and will snipe an empty shotgun shell at 50 yds then a Tactical Solutions barrel would be my first choice.
If accuracy is a primary concern then a Tactical Solutions barrel would not be my first choice.
The PWS barrel will serve you well but the chamber was designed around the 40gr round nose bullets for the reason that most accurate ammo comes in this profile. It’s not to say that it won’t shoot other ammo well like the bulk Fed stuff but it won’t chamber some of the wadcutter style ammo or the CCI stingers.
I designed this chamber around the SK standard plus / Wolf match target a reasonably inexpensive match ammo and the barrel was subsequently tensioned to preform best with this ammo. I’ve seen sub ½ MOA out to 100 YDS in testing with the SK and ¾” groups @ 50 YDS with the blue box bulk Fed ammo.
If you’re thinking stainless so that you don't have to worry about the chrome moly rusting . With reasonable care either barrel will serve you a lifetime.

I make my own pillars when I bed my actions and always clearance my barrels from my stocks. I believe any of that worth the effort and I enjoy pretending to act like I know something.

I shoot .22 matches and am very happy with an Adams and Bennet http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.com/adams_bennett/catalog.asp?product=18-inch-10-22-Long-Rifle-Blued-Barrel
It does have a Bentz style match chamber but it will feed anything except Stingers.

just remember, its...stain   less, not stain   free. get the best you can buy, you are shooting the barrel, everything else is icing on the cake.

Fastfire's 10/22 is super accurate, that is a fact.
The last couple of years results from the .22Tactical matches prove this out

PWS gets my vote.  My step-son was gifted one by Justin (thanks again) at the State Steel Challenge match this past year.  For Christmas I built him a 10/22 around this barrel and he has no trouble putting 25rds into a group the size of his fist at 60yds as fast as he can pull the trigger.  When sighting it in I was very impressed with the accuracy.  Support a local company, get the PWS.

CRITERIA CHANGE: purpose now is to smoke anyone and everyone at LRTR match ;)
Accuracy is numero uno. Adams and Bennett is sounding better and better. JMack, what say ye? What advantage do you have over this barrel?

I have no experience with the Adams and Bennett barrels but I do have a fist full of other 10/22 barrels and a 100yrd range.
If you can talk Fastfire or one of the other Adams and Bennett owners in to it we can have a 10/22 barrel test day.

Head to head barrel shootout, sounds like more fun than a barrel of monkeys. THANK YOU for the invite JMack! I'll be in touch with the guilty parties and post some results here.

I saw one of JMacks .22s last year...  :o :o

I have one of the cheaper stainless barrels and decided it was about 20 pounds too heavy for most of my kind of off-hand shooting.  After I started shooting Steel Challenge I bought a TacSol from Hawktech and it has performed well.  I agree with JMack that it isn't the most accurate, but it works for SC.  Coming from a Dan Wesson background I really like the PWS tensioned barrel concept and am switching to it.  It is a little heavier than the TacSol so it will be interesting to compare it to the TacSol in Steel Challenge.  I figure I can swap optics and be good for the LRTR or Silhouette matches as well.

A co-worker and my cousin both have green mountain barrels and are pretty impressive for $90-$130 they go for.  When i was looking at upgrading my 10/22, i replaced barrel, stock, action, trigger... with a savage mkII TR rifle  :) and it shoots incredible for stock gun, and my 10/22 is the plinker.  Can anybody pm or link me to these tactical 22lr shoot events, sounds fun!
