What's your reason for shooting competition?
« on: February 01, 2012, 06:25:11 PM »
1. Competition is how you get better at anything. Since I found the time and money a couple years ago to start shooting again, I want to get better at it. Competition also allows me to quantify how much better I am. Getting better at stuff is satisfying.

2. Competition is more fun than just standing there shooting the same old piece of paper. You get to shoot all kinds of fun targets that most people can't afford, or that most ranges don't allow outside of sanctioned competition.

3. I turned 50 so I'm too dang old to ride my dirtbike both days every weekend, so now i have a free day.

1.  I like to shoot, and shooting competition has made me a better shooter and gun handler and given me incentive to practice.

2.  I like to shoot with people.

3.  I wouldn't set up the elaborate stages if it was just myself in the desert.

4.  I couldn't justify owning all the elaborate targets and props if it was just myself in the desert.

5.  But the real reason:  It's cheaper than therapy.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.   ;D

Life is hard.  It's harder if you're stupid and can't shoot straight.

HaHa, not much competition here...just wait till Oct ::). I go for the fun, and camaraderie. I like picking up on all the tips that I get to improve myself.

I started because I got tired of going out in the desert and shooting by myself.

Then I realized how much fun it was and decided it was my new hobby (as TG said, safer than dirtbiking).

Then I started shooting pretty good and enjoyed pushing myself and seeing how well I did against the other shooters in the valley.

In the process I met a bunch of cool guys, so now its all the above. :)

Another reason for me, camaraderie and exposure to other (mostly more knowledgeable) gun nuts. If you're thinking about getting a particular gun, you are likely to run across someone at a match who is shooting it and will talk to you about it and let you fondle it.

Cuz shooting a Colt ... is better than sex... no matter how good it is.
 :sarcoff:

No really though, since becoming an LE Instructor I learned a few things.
Most importantly it's real easy to get comfortable with what you know.
Getting out into different environments and different types of shooters really opens my eyes and mind to many different opportunities.  I wouldn't shoot competition if it were all the same.  The diversity rocks!
And... it's really nice to be able to shoot instead of running the day.
