Upcoming USPSA Matches in February
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:35:12 PM »
AFAIK, this is the USPSA Match schedule for February:

Saturday, Feb 4:  Practice Match at Nampa

Saturday, Feb 11:  USPSA match at Idaho Falls

Sunday, Feb 19:  USPSA Match at Nampa

Saturday, Feb 25: USPSA Match at Emmett

All of the above matches will have set-up that starts around 0830, registration at 0930, and walk-thru at 1000 hrs.  As always, the more help we can get during set-up/tear-down the better.  125-150 rnds of ammo is usually sufficient.

These matches are weather dependent, and if it gets too wet we may need to cancel.  Currently all the ranges are a little muddy due to all the recent rainfall, but hopefully things dry out.  If we have to cancel, we'll try to post the updates here.

The big change for 2012 is Parma is going to re-structure their monthly USPSA match into a USPSA Multi-gun Match (rifle, shotgun, pistol) using Time Plus scoring -which is pretty similar to IMGA scoring (1 A-zone or 2 hits anywhere, steel must react to score). I haven't heard yet if Parma is going to start up their Multi-gun Matches in Feb or wait until March.  It'll be the 2nd Saturday of the month when they do.  We'll post an update as soon as the MD makes a decision.  Stay tuned.

Be well and shoot straight!

OK, finished up the stages this evening for the Practice Match on Saturday.  Minimum round count if you don't miss is 138.

5 stages total.  Four stages will be all steel with minimal resetting needed between strings or shooter since we're using plate racks and steel challenge plates in lieu of poppers and cardboard.  We'll shoot each stage 3 times.  The fifth stage will be a regular USPSA 24 rnd field course that will only be shot once.  We're going to test-drive the new targets we recently bought from MGM (forward falling poppers, pop-ups, and drop-turners).  In addition, we also need to test-drive the Reed Reactor targets that Dean just built (based on the plans for the infamous Reed Reactor), so I needed a stage that incorporated some cardboard targets.  Yeah, I know the RR is not a legal USPSA target, but it is a hell of a lot of fun to shoot (some would say infuriating), and this is a Practice Match.

Oh, for those that shot the VTac Zig-Zag stage in last month's match, it's back.  I kept the stage diagram and we're going to set it up the same way as we did last time so we can track our progress.

Four of the stages are shotgun friendly, so bring it and a couple of boxes of birdshot if you want to partake.

Cheers

Did you see Jesse T's video of him shooting a 3-gun stages on crutches?  THAT should be an inspiration for all of us to keep going.  It's in his intro.

I shot Emmett 12 weeks after my 8 hour long knee reconstruction where I had my  LCL replaced,  ACL replaced, and a hamstring graft.
I had to walk/limp through all the stages...  Oh and I got 3rd behind Evans and Matt...
So quit yer whinin ! ;)

Fun match today. Kudos to the MD once again. Though I had to hold off on shooting the last stage. Too slippery out there, and my knee isn't stable enough yet to deal with that.

Scores are done for the Feb 4 Practice Match.

MattE won pistol!
Jaggy won shotgun!

Forward-Falling Poppers work!
Pop-up Poppers work!
Reed-Reactor works! (well, one of them did...)

Not sure what the theme for March's Practice Match will be, but we'll come up with something.  If you guys have skills you want to work on, let me know.  We'll even start doing IDPA-esque skills at the Practice Match if more people from IDPA show up.

Updated scores.  I missed a scoresheet.

Evans...I blame you for these matches taking so dang long! If you weren't such a good ambassador of the sport all the new folks wouldn't come back.:sarcoff:  Seriously, all the new guys I talk to credit you with setting the hook, nice work.  Thank you for being so organized with the planning of these matches and getting the scores out so quickly.  And thank you to Mrs. Kuo as well; I am sure this takes away from some quality family time as well.  Looking forward to the points match on the 19th.

Thanks guys, glad you like the matches.

Gotta say, NRGC Board of Directors has been very supportive of growing the practical shooting sports, and in the last year they authorized a size-able chunk of funding to cover the cost of the new shed, props, steel, etc.  I think they realize that USPSA/Steel Challenge/IDPA draw big crowds, and we're easily covering our costs and improvements thanks to all the loyal support from our shooters.

So thank YOU guys for supporting NRGC and ISPS!

Fortunately Mrs. Kuo is heavily involved in AKC Agility, and usually when I'm shooting she's running dogs.  Works out well.

There were some very challenging stages today with all the movement.  Thanks again Evans for organizing these events and helping people work on their weaker points.

OK, so this weekend we'll have two pistol matches, both at Nampa's outdoor range.

Saturday, Feb 18:  Steel Challenge Match, comprised of four stages.  Set-up 0900, and we'll probably be done around 1200 hrs.  100 rnd minimum, but bring extra because very few of us shoot all four stages 'clean'.  You can register to shoot multiple guns (centerfire pistol, rimfire pistol or rifle).  $5/shooter per gun,  $3/Juniors, and NRGC members get a $2 discount.

Sunday, Feb 19:  USPSA Points Match.  Five regular stages and one classifier.  Minimum round count is 125-ish.  Set-up 0830, registration 0930, walk-thru at 1000 hrs.  $10/adult, $5/Junior, and NRGC members get the $2 discount.  This will be a pistol-only match.  No AR side match (sorry).

The weather forecast for this weekend is looking promising.  They revised the forecast, and Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be sunny and in the high-40's.  I'm optimistic that the range will dry out this week and footing will be better than it was last Saturday.

Lastly, you do NOT need to be a member of either USPSA, Steel Challenge Shooting Association, or NRGC to shoot these matches.  NRGC is affiliated with USPSA and SCSA, but being Level I matches, membership in either organization is not needed.

Sunday's USPSA Match is ON!  Conditions at the range are pretty decent.  We didn't get much precip this morning.  Just enough to wet the windshield.

Set-up 0830, registration 0930, and walk-thru at 1000 hrs.

Hope to see you all there!

Scores from today's USPSA match at Nampa are posted:  http://www.idahouspsa.com/results.php?match=458

Big thanks for all the help with set-up and tear-down.  It made a big difference.  Plus HUGE thanks to Mike W. and Sarah for scoring the match as we shot it which enabled us to post the scores faster than you can say ricky-ticky-tembo-no-sarembo  (now where in the hell did that come from.....????)

And the winner of today's match..... Beau!

As a reminder, the next USPSA match is at Emmett on Feb 25th!  Hope to see you all there.

Cheers

Emmett's match is still on.  They have a backup plan for stages if the weather turns marginal.

Setup 0900-ish, registration at 0930, walk-thru at 1000 hrs.  125-150 rnds ought to do it.

Hope to see you there!

Sorry, just had to say it!  Actually, the winds were not bad in Emmett.  Steady 3-5 mph, gusts 7-10, but nowhere near the 25-30 that we were afraid might happen.

Fun match today, even though I shot like poop.

From what it sounded like, we were in the "eye" of the cold front compared to what the lads in Parma had to deal with yesterday.  Emmett's good luck with weather definitely was there for us!

I need a new follower or spring for one of my mags.  Went to premature slide lock with 2 rnds remaining.  Same thing happened last week at Nampa and finally realized at his match what was going on.  In retrospect, it's been about a year+ since I last replaced them...

Let me know what you figure out, I just put grams followers and springs in, and had to work the follower and slide stop to get it to work right, I still get a premature lock with 1 round on 1 mag, so I need to work it a little more. I've read that article a few times, and still trying to debug the problem.  But I'm out of town right now so can't do anything until I get home.  A few things I think may be the problem:

It only started doing this recently, so the spring may be getting old or feedlips may have spread a little.  It consistently happens when there are two rounds remaining in the mag, and with two rounds in the mag the follower is too far below to be making contact with the slide stop.  I think somehow the top bullet is making contact with the slide stop -but how?  It could be that the spring is weak and allowing bullet bounce in the mag during recoil and that is what is activating the slide stop, or there is too much slop in the feedlip dimensions -once again allowing the bullet to move around during recoil and contacting the slide stop.

This happened with this mag when I first got the gun, and a new spring/follower kit from Grams fixed it.  So have a few new springs on order, and we'll see what happens when they arrive.  I do recall beveling the sharp edge of the follower at tad to get it to clear the mag catch hole...  I'll also mic the mag lips when I get home to see if they are out of spec.

I thought long and hard about disabling the slide stop all together, but so far I haven't done it -and I don't think I will if I can get this mag fixed.  I hardly ever go to slide lock in Limited, but I do in L-10 and IDPA so want to keep that feature for consistency.

My other two mags (bought them new) are still going strong.  It's just the one mag.  That'll be my third mag/barney for now until I get this debugged.

If you don't want your gun to go to slidelock, disable the $2 follower NOT the $50 slidestop and related parts.  Its easy.  You'll be able to figure it out after looking at it for about 3 seconds.
