New to me Colt 1991A1
« on: January 21, 2012, 02:13:40 AM »

Hi I'm always creepin' around here and decided to share.  Just received this beauty in a trade and couldn't be happier with it.  It's a series 80 and one of the best feeling guns I've ever shot.  Hello to all you .45 lovers out there!

Nice!  You going to change anything or are you just thinking of shooting the hell out of it the way it is?  Have you noticed any problems getting the gripsafety to disengage when shooting?  If I shoot one with a standard profile gripsafety and a flat mainspring housing I do.  Usually end up with and arched housing after a while.

Not to be overly picky, but that a M1991A1... but still a 1911 model and they are great!

Lot's of options to play with, beavertails with the bump are and option, hammer, sights.

The best thing you could do however, is put a nice set of wood grips on there, she would look sexy!

Yeah that was a typo on my part...  I've got 1911's on the brain!  I've put a little over a hundred rounds through it in the past couple weeks to feel out what I like and don't like, this being my first 1911 model gun AND my first .45.  The grips are Pachmayr, they feel good on the hands but would like to try something more traditional.  I've had no noticeable issues with the grip safety disengaging but I'll make note of it next time I shoot.  The only thing I'm not happy with on this are the sights, so I'm doing some research on those.  The trigger is a Wilson Combat Ultralight Match Trigger which was a little over sized, but with some minor fitting it gave me a tight, smooth action.  Really impressed with everything so far  :)

Nice pistol!

Yeah, the blade sights on a Colt are nothing to brag about.  Its hard to tell from your pics, but I think the front sight is staked (my Series 80 COACP came that way as well).  If you upgrade, you'll need to get the slide cut for dovetails on the front and back to use most after-market sights that are worth a damn.  However, RK Gunsmithing can do the milling and sight install.

Novak or Heinie are good choices for sights.  My personal preference is the Heinie Slant Pro.  This one is plain black without any dots or tritium inserts, but they also offer those if that is what you want.

Upswept beavertail grip safeties that a lot of 1911's have are intended to allow the shooter to grip the gun as high as possible, thereby keeping the bore as low as possible to help control the gun during recoil.  While its not too involved to have one fitted, most BT-GS's are not drop-in affairs.  But RK can help with that as well.

As far as grips, there are a ton of choices out there.  Brownells sells a wide range of grips, from basic checkered wood grips to grips made from exotics such as faux-ivory, Micarta, or G10.  If G-10, give Larry Davidson a look.  He does really good work, and responds very quickly to even custom orders.

Happy hunting!
