Pheasants & WMA's
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:24:31 AM »
Hello all - still pretty new to the site, but thought I'd toss this out.

As a kid I used to hunt the Sand Hollow area.  Used to know a farmer who let me and my dad and buddies hunt out there.  Well, he's long since retired and sold his farm to a big corporation who destroyed all the cover.  Birds are damn hard to find out there.

My son is finally old enough to hunt and I want to take him out.  Are the WMA's worth the extra permit cost?  Anyone hunt a private farm that needs a couple more folks to come along this October?

Thanks for the help.

Mark

WMA's can be worth the cost ,but my experience has been too many people will still walk in no matter how many cars are in the parking lot, and most don't pay attention to where the shot will land.

My main hunting partner and I have been peppered to many times to count in WMA's during dove, and pheasant season, and nothing feels better then a load of #4 high brass to the back and neck.

Most of the time I end up either not going out for pheasant or hitting up some back roads.

My neighbor hunts a lot at Montour.  He brings home lots of pheasant but you will need a dog.  And there are a lot of people there so he goes mostly on the weekdays.
Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

Thanks for the info.  I've driven by the Montour WMA during pheasant season and it always looks packed.  I wondered about the # of shooters and getting peppered.  That's not the experience I want my son to have his first time out with a gun.
