« on: January 15, 2012, 11:51:19 PM »
so i bought a smith and wesson 357 mag highway patrolman from a guy at work with a shoulder holster and a set of smaller wood grips and 78 rounds of 357 ammo, just wondering what the going price might be on a package deal like this and wondering if i made out ok on it, not really into revolvers so not sure what the demand and prices are on them . ???

As usual, it depends on a lot of things.  When was it made?  What kind of condition is it in?  How much has it been fired?  Did it come with original box and papers?  M28s used to be the redheaded step children of S&W's line, being a less deluxe finished version of the M27.  These days, they are attracting a lot of interest on their own, so prices have been going up.  Again, it depends on condition and when it was made.  Well used and blue worn examples may start out around $350, nice ones will be $500 and up.  Everything being equal, 4" barrels are bringing better prices these days than the 6".  M28-2s and earlier (so called pinned and recessed) will bring better prices than M28-3s.  They are good guns.

M27-adjustable sights, M28- fixed. M28- parkerized, or dull finish, M27- blue (or nickel)  If you open the cylinder, inside the crane housing you should see a stamp indicating which..

I believe the M28's had adjustable sights.  The Model 28 did not have the high luster blued finish the Model 27's were famous for.  Both are very nice guns.

Well if you post a few pictures of what you have we could tell you approx what it might be worth.
I assume it is mechanically sound and locks up tight. Right?

The 28 was designed to be more of a duty gun and the 27 a target or sport model. It was a match for a 27 other than the finish and a trigger stop rod. The rod was an easy addition and properly fitted corrected over travel. Mine had an adjustable rear.
