We have wolf problems up here.
« on: January 12, 2012, 08:40:19 AM »
Everyone thought I was crazy when I told them I saw a wolf on our property, a few months back. I have about 3 miles off Hwy 21. Yesterday, there were several sightings of at least two wolves as far down as 1/2 mile from Hwy 21. This morning, several people are missing pets. Time for a little hunting party to take care of the problem. We need to protect our livestock.

I want to setup a few trail cameras to see if we can get an idea of their movements. Anyone on here with a trail camera I can borrow? It will be used on private property, so theft will not be an issue. Not up here anyway. Thanks...

I don't have a camera but I do have a great electronic game call and 300wm. I have tags for me and my son so we can add to the total taken, I also know where you live. So just give me the word and I can bring the call to the match Sunday.

Cool. Since you know where we live, you know there are limited places we can take a shot. As soon as we have a plan, I will let you know.

Sounds like a perfect time for a Gemtech Demo.
Say a bolt .308/Sandstorm combo, or AR 5.56/G5-T combo, quiet hunting is pretty fun.

Wolf hides don't really seem to be worth much/anything from what I can find online. After F&G checks them can you just throw them in the dumpster? Or is that illegal? I could see getting one or two mounted/tanned whatever but after that?

I would either have the whole thing taxidermied if I could afford it, or I will tan it myself and hang it in the man cave. If they are taking pets and livestock is at risk, I would bet we have some options with f&g. I have a tag, but we might have options that do not require one. I was planning on calling to see what we can do about it.

I wouldn't toss the hides. If you can't afford to have them tanned the hide will keep in the freezer for a long time. They must be worth something?

Check online for hide tanning kits, I have friends that tan coyote hides for the wall.
I remember when you skin it coat the inside of the hide with non iodized salt to remove moisture, then the next day wash the hide then Ican't remember what they do next.
It takes some time but will be a good thing for the man cave.

I want some wolf hide underwear.  Fur out, boxer jocks!

Why?  So, me and Ted Nugent can hang out after the SHTF.  We are so going to rule.

I haven't been there for a few years now, but wolf ruffs for parkas brought good money in Alaska.  200 bucks and higher was typical for good ones and you can get more than a few of them from a good hide.  The only thing more sought after for ruffs than wolf was wolverine.  Both of them are good for ruffs in that your breath doesn't freeze to the hair.

Yeah I see where people sell them but I have not found a place (looking on the internet) that buys them, particularly green. Looks like they have to be commercially tanned to have any value.

When I was young, there was a Shakeys Pizza joint in Casper Wyo that had a wall hanging made out of wolf pelts. It went about 15ft up the wall and all the tails were intact off to the right side, it seems like there were 10 of them. After a few beers, the topic of how with the right gal that blanket would sure be nice to play on. I certainly would look good on the bed.
And by the way the whole house is a mans castle, and if the little women needs a special room for herself I guess that could be called her cave.

Have them down here to, woke up to a bunch of yelping & howling outside last week and looked out the window to see 3 adult wolfs and about 6-7 pups walking across our driveway and heading up the hill.

A neighbor told my Dad that 5 were seen near Black Canyon Dam earlier in the week and 5 were seen below Freezout Hill (in the valley)one was shot.
That makes 5 that I know of that went down in the last 2 weeks :-*

A friend e-mailed me a link to this pic of one that was supposedly killed near McCall fairly recent.

also I've seen a pure white one near here twice now, not sure on the size but its definitely bigger than a large German Shepherd...

Will post a photo if I ever manage to get one of it.

Hope you take care of a few of the wolves. I remember seeing my first, back around 2004 near the ski resort in McCall. Went for a short hike early last year near Lucky Peak res and saw one watching cow elk waiting for them to drop calves.
