How do you decide if it's time to sell or trade a gun?
« on: January 08, 2012, 05:32:49 PM »
I've always sold outright, never traded. Because I know what I want and at what price. But now I'm thinking of trading a firearm.

Purchased a WalMart Beretta 390 two years ago thinking I'd do some sporting clays. Neeever did it with this 28" shotgun since my now-favorite 12g o/u came home.  Thought I'd do a little hunting with it since the black finish was simple and I wouldn't care if the polymer stock was scratched. Again: no hunting. So now it sits loaded up with 00 in the bedroom corner. Obviously hope to never use it for that.  I have all bases covered for other pistols and long guns for activities I actually partake in numerous times per week.

But it's a great shotgun. Backed by a good company. Cleaned it, shot it about 200 shells, perfection. All the online reviews claim it as one of the best shotguns price not withstanding.

Do you sell or trade something like this? Or do you end up regretting selling a simple 100% reliable semi-auto because it's just nice to have one and the day may come when I go hunting or bust clays.

How do you justify keeping or trading a firearm - whether it's a pistol, shotgun, hunting rifle, etc. - that isn't a piece of crap but doesn't get used.

I only get rid of a gun if I absolutely dislike shooting it.

It is/was a joy to shoot. Soft recoil, reliable, predictable. Simple.
Since you put it that way, I do have a near new 9mm I detest shooting. THAT one will be for sale in the near future. Bought it based on reviews and stellar reputation. Grip shape doesn't fit my hand, bore axis is high, flippy muzzle....easier to blame the pistol than my stance, grip or odd hand shape, ha.

I only get rid of a gun if I absolutely dislike shooting it.

If I don't shoot or have a reason to hold onto a gun, it moves on.  I prefer to have as few firearms as possible to cover all my bases these days.  The more diverse your firearms the less you can practice worth all of them.

I am somewhat ADD when it comes to guns . When I don't shoot a gun much or when my interests change direction (which sometimes happens before I ever fire a shot with some guns) I look through the safe and send stuff packing to make room and cash for something I think I want/need/desire more . The only time I trade something is when I can get Exactly what I want in trade .

Why spend hours cleaning a gun and buying cleaning supplies, when you can order a new gun so much faster. But, shooting a different trigger and sight picture at almost every match kinda puts some stress on your game.

Wait! You’re supposed to clean them? Why I was not informed of this?

+1 on that!  Seriously though, there are a lot of what-ifs, but you will almost always get a better deal selling a gun than you will trading it (unless you find a private party that wants the gun you have, and has exactly what you want).

That's why we go to club matches on the weekend...  :sarcon: it's a lot cheaper to shoot someone else gun at the range, that buy one and trade it the next day.  :sarcoff:

You think we actually go to shoot our own guns  :o

Simply look at the roll stamps...
If it says Kimber or Hi Point... Sell it quickly.
If its Euro ... Trade it.
If it says Colt... Love it , Cherish It, and forever hold it close for it was a gift from God.

If it runs good and does something that no other gun I have does I keep it.

If I find something that does what I have "better" or "cheaper" then I sell and re-buy.

That's the beauty about buying non-Colt and non-STI guns.  You can own more than 1 ! ;)
