Suppressor Cover Questions
« on: January 06, 2012, 03:48:47 PM »
I am hoping to get my first suppressor this month (or the next or the next or the..... ???).
I have been looking at suppressor covers to try to keep most of my hide attached to my hands.

TAB Gear seems to make a nice looking one that seems to get good reviews.
https://www.riflesonly.com/pro-shop/tactical-gear/tab-sas-suppressor-anti-mirage-shield.html

Has anyone tried the SUPCOV sold by US Tactical Supply?
http://ustacticalsupply.com/556762suppressorcover95.aspx

It looks as if the SUPCOV does provide some degree of ventilation and the silicon stuff works great when cooking so seems to be very heat resistant.

Are there any issues with using a suppressor cover on a can (mainly heat issues)?

Does it help tone down the "can ring" a bit (the vibration of the supressor after the shot).

Thanks
Pat

I have the Tab gear, and love it. It stays on 100% of the time, and has since I got the can, so I'm not sure about the can ring.

I have the slipon version, and it does a couple of things... one protects my hand after I shoot it, I can take it off, drop it in my bag and not think twice about it. Second, it keeps the heat signature of the can from making noticeable mirage when shooting.. I've shot this in the summer and after 20 rounds, I don't notice any mirage off the can.

Yeah, not sure what happened with the Tab Gear processing time. I might have just got lucky, mine took a while, I think about 4 weeks. I think TG might still be waiting for his... too bad, it's a good product.

That elite cover looks kinda cool too... might have to get one of those in a different color, you can never have too may choices for your can.  ;D

I make my own.
I'm sure I have a couple of yards of Nomex floating around if you want to make one.

I've never bothered with a can cover.

There was only one time I needed one, on a winter LRTR stage that was 30 shots in 10 minutes
(got a bit mirage-y)

What can did you choose?

I'm using the US Tactical cover, it's made by Bowers Group in Oregon. Put it on the can, never had to take it off. Works like it says, never slides around and does very well to cool the can like its supposed to.

You might have a hard time finding a cover for a rimfire can.

do rimfire cans get hot enough to need a cover?

I don't think so, am I missing something?

Last I checked Tony will make a one-off if needed.
The Bowers Group make the silicon can cover for a 1" can (black only) as sold by US Tactocal Supply.  USTS does not carry the 1" covers.

I was hoping Joey might jump in and say one way or the other if covers are an issue with Gemtech cans.  The 22LR might take a bit to heat up but what about a Quicksand on a semi-AR?  Will the heat hurt a Ti can or the baffles?

Pat,

I have shot many thousands of rounds with my .22 rimfire can both on a pistol and simiauto rifle and never felt the need for a cover.
That said if you want one then I’ll give you the material to make one, it’s a no-brainer.
I run covers on all my centerfire cans to cut down on the noticeable mirage.

There were a lot of guys wanting can covers at the LRTR.

It became very noticable when you shoot consecutive rounds on a cold day, what the mirage from your can will do to your  sight picture in the scope.
