 Spring Patrol Shoot

March 17th. Set up on the 16th starting at 1pm. Saturday signup at 0830 shooting by 0930. Plan on 200 rounds rifle, 50 rounds handgun. 70 rounds split between a DM and sniper rifle. This will be a IRON SITES ONLY match excepting the sniper and DM rifles. Rappell tower will be used. RSVP to enter match. Team match  with 4 man teams. I had the same question... I'm thinking he's thinking Iron sights only, because he's that way

I'll ask him and find out.

I've only been to a few patrol shoots.  What I loved about them was that there was no gear restrictions.  It was always get jocked and run what you brung under whatever conditions are presented.  Seems like it's more and more "Get jocked up and run what you would bring to a narrow set of conditions."

Iron sights are just that, no scopes, red dots, aimpoints. They would be as a A2 handle or standard sights on a AK or SKS , stock Fal etc.

What is the point of iron sights only?  Trying to level the playing field?  Doesn't seem very tactical.  This is called a Patrol shoot, not a minimalist shoot.

Could end up like the Fall 2011 Patrol shoot, cancelled due to lack of participation.  Just saying!!

What's the point of iron sights only? It's what the match director has in mind for this shoot.

If you want to come and play, take off the optics and see what you got... I shot my first patrol shoot with irons only, I really didn't feel that handicapped.

If you want to use optics, then you can be the DM or the sniper and keep your glass.

And if you feel you can do a better job as the Patrol Shoot Match Director... step on up...  Just saying.

So what I am reading is that what the Match Director wants, the Match Director gets, no matter what anyone else wants or suggests?  Why not take a vote?

I would safely presume that one goal is to have maximum participation, especially after last patrol shoot. But if it is designed for a select few that want to be told what gear they can use, then have fun with that.  Furthermore, if your not the Match Director you shouldn't respond as if it is a personal attack, and if you are the Match Director, don't take it personally. Just saying !!!

Iron sights only sounds interesting to me. Good opportunity to dust off those oddball weapons.  If it's not a drill weekend, I hope to be there. I've got some friends I'm sure would like to go as well.

Remember what they say about assumptions... and this case is more true than not. We are not looking for maximum participation, which is why the last patrol shoot was a invitation only, and unfortunately for that shoot, most of the invitees had other business to that took priority.

You want to know why there is no vote... because it's not your match. Plain and simple, you want to have input in what this match is about. Setup is on Friday before the match, be there and help out, and you can make suggestions all you want.

If the Match Director sets up the course of fire and they will listen to what you say......
As an example go to a major match and tell them what to do, I am sure that they will
tell you as to your choices.........
You want a match set it up your way, plan and simple. Many open dates on the Parma
calender to choose from..........

One of the things I really like about these matches (Patrol Shoot, LRTR, etc.) and this match director are the lesson's that come from each of these matches.  The matches always have a subject matter to them and I always come away with more knowledge and skills.  Something you don't always get with the "just point and shoot as fast as you can" matches.  (not that there is anything wrong with those matches, as I enjoy them too).  I see this upcoming Patrol Shoot as another skill builder classroom exercise that will enhance my knowledge and abilities.

If you have ever met the match director, he is a character and can motivate you like no one else...  the answer was... what's the matter, ya scared? ;D

So off with the scope and on with the iron's... I've been shooting iron sights at the indoor .22 postal match lately, it's kinda fun going back to the irons after using a scope for a while...

I'll have my sniper rifle with me as well so if we get to do it a couple of times hopefully I can run it in a couple of positions.

Any idea on what distance the long range targets will be at, or specifically what would be an appropriate caliber for the "sniper" rifle? I've got a few that might work, so I'm trying to figure out which. Also, is 200 rds shooting a perfect iteration, or is it the recommended ammo load for us mere mortals.

for sniper-y rifles, max distance would be 900 yards or so, not sure on minumum distance, depends.
using a .308 is pretty common

that's cool.  Since it is more than 900, that would mean some nifty possibilities.
