Not really a poll, per se, just curious.
« on: December 13, 2011, 10:48:18 AM »
Keeping PERSEC in mind:
The topic of ammo on hand, at home, came up in a conversation between me and a fellow cop that lives over on the other side of the US.
He thinks the "average" shooter keeps about 100-200 rounds at any given time at home.
I figured the average to be considerably more.
So, out of curiousity, we all probably know someone who might have some ammo at home, right?
If one was to know someone with ammunition at home, about how many rounds of aforementioned ammunition would that someone have, on hand-at any given time?

I know a person (who shoots a lot) who has said they have ammunition at home.  They said they probably have a minimum of 1K and probably up to 4K rounds of varying calibers laying around.

If I was to know someone with ammunition at home, that person would have more than 200 rounds of loaded aforementioned ammunition, on hand-at any given time.
In fact if I knew any guys that stored ammo at home they would have many times that amount of loaded ammo and components to keep them shooting long into the future.

Unfortunately I don't store any ammo myself as all my firearms were lost in a tragic boating mishap.

I only keep around 30 to 100 rounds at any one time, but I've heard it's not uncommon for shooters in general to have something like, ohhhh......20,000 or so.  I suppose some folks take into consideration all the threats the 2A is facing, and with that, preparing for the possibility of a  nationwide ban and/or purchasing limits. (like in California).  I mean after all, many retailers are now keeping electronic records of ammo purchases via scanning Id's and entering card transactions into ATFE databases, but, it's paid off, they arrest and detain hundreds of terrorists every day using these countermeasures in the war on terror.  So, that's awesome!
I DON'T RECALL READING ANYTHING IN 2A THAT EVEN SOMEWHAT RESEMBLES THE GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS FOR SPORTING OR HUNTING PURPOSES!  that's just a bonus!

Uh... we talkin rimfire or centerfire? id hafta laugh if someone was a "shooter" and had 200 rounds of 22lr. i think 1k per centerfire gun is probably good or at least a nice start.

I can neither confirm nor deny the existance of around 200-500 rounds per "ish" at some undisclosed locations.
I would think as well that is a bit light.

that's 200 to 500 per caliber, right? And extra for .223 since you have more than 3 or 4 ARs to feed...

Don't you just hate those boating mishaps?  If I owned any firearms, I would wonder what the purpose of having more than enough for one mag would be?  Afterall, having a personal rule of keeping no less than 500 per caliber on hand at any one time would take up far too much space.  Can you imagine havine another 500 per caliber just to plink with?  How could you ever store that much?

How many rounds of .223 fill a 3' wide by 4'deep by 3' tall space?  How may rounds of 9mm would fill the space between one section of the studs of a 8 foot tall wall?  I would only keep on hand what I need of course.
lets meet face to face sometime.

Having first hand experience with the ATF coming to see me from a post on this very site, I have to ask the question why would you ask? Given the current climate with the elected officials destroying the constitution with the new act aiming at detaining American citizens. Why would anyone ask this let alone answer it knowing what is coming? Maybe my tinfoil hat is just on too tight.

Guy I know thinks the the country's going to hell, he orders 2k 7.62 rounds each month. He makes better money then I do. Some people keep about 1k for each gun it seems. Others have what's in the mags that came with the gun- under 100.

To elaborate my original question, the other cop (a deputy in eastern United States) and I were talking about the different mind-set and general attitude about guns and their related subjects in regards to that side of the US and this side. He is blown away that we can drive around with a rack in the rear window of your pickup with anything you can fit-loaded or not(!). (I am not arguing the wisdom, just the legality)  His state has some of THE most restrictive gun laws in the country and he cannot comprehend how we out here have virtually the exact opposite in restrictions, and as I understand it, way way less gun related crimes.  The conversation developed into how his agency has to deal with guns, and I in-turn compared how it is in this area. Then we got into self-defense weapons as opposed to true sporting/hunting weapons, and eventually into the amount of ammo a person usually has.  He hunts ducks, and says he usually has about 3 boxes of 12Ga during the winter.
(We truely have it good out here guys.)
In regards to the tin-hat and related folks.....gimmie a break.  I have worked with the ATF on a few occasions, and every time they were GTG. -But alas, I am drifting off my own topic.......
It's a shame where a guy can't ask a relatively simple, relatively harmless question, on a gun specific forum, in the midst of numerous fellow LEGAL gun owners,  without the tin-foil paranoia creeping into the conversation.
Never mind-I kinda' regret even asking now. I'm going to bed.

When I was shooting USPSA I generally had 3-5K of pistol caliber on hand as well as several thousand .223 and shotgun rounds in case we shot a 3-gun . When Dad and I were shooting a lot of Sniper matches we generally bought enough components to load 4-5K rounds of ammo for the rifles . For whistle pigs I generally kept enough 22-250 and .22lr on hand to wear out a rifle every year .

Now that my kids are older I don't have much time to shoot so I keep my 1911 loaded and a couple boxes of .22lr for my Daughters rifle in case she wants to go out and shoot .

First off Bill no disrespect. I have met you and found you to be one of the better LEOs out there. So goes like this. When I first joined this forum about 3 years ago I had just obtained my FFL. Still naieve to the laws I was selling a PLR with the compact forfend and rail. Slapped on a forward pistol grip took pictures and posted it on the swapmeet here. I immediately was emailed by one of the old timers, I think it was Nomad telling me that the forward pistol grip was not allowed with out a $5 tax stamp. Within 30 minutes of posting it I had taken it down. Between 30 and 45 minutes was how long it was up tops. 3 days later I had an FBI and an ATF agent show up at my day job with a picture pulled from the post asking me all about the weapon and if I had paid the $5 tax stamp. After questioning me for about 45 minutes, they left me alone. They sent not one but two agents to investigate a $5 tax stamp violation. So sorry Bill if I seem a little paranoid. With what is going now can you really blame people for being paranoid?  They have been trying to criminalize everyday Americans for the last 3 years. First it was the Department of Homeland securities report that returning vets were possibly terrorists. Now this new legislation. What's next door to door? Maybe not but what?

Been going on for longer than that... 1934 was the first big one,  but even before that you had attempts at making criminals out of citizens back in 1837 for trying to ban handguns...

Averages are funny things. One extreme value can cause an unusual belief about a whole group.

An example from a statistics class: Several years ago a large mid-western university had claimed that recent graduates with social studies degrees averaged over $140k for a first year salary. Turns out they had 9 graduates in that program and one was a first round NBA draftee. Now guess how much the other 8 made.
All data is flawed, some just less so.

how many rounds of aforementioned ammunition would that someone have, on hand-at any given time?

8 in the mag, one in the pipe and 8 in the spare on the belt.  ;D
