Need help with a Holster snap...
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:20:34 PM »
Firstly, I didn't know where to put this really so miscellaneous sounded right.

I have a Bianchi 19L holster that I really like and was wondering if anyone could help me in moving the female snap fastener for the thumb break down about 1/2 of an inch. The holster is the right fit for my CZ75B but seeing as its for a SIG P226, the thumb strap is too loose. Lowering the female snap just a tad would be perfect but I have no idea how to do it or put a new one in.

Snaps basically are two parts that are peened together with a hammer and punch.  It works both ways for male and female end, just different parts.

The female side of the snap is comprised of the backer, which has a flat base and a hollow post, and the female button.

To remove it, look inside the female button, and see if you can see where the backer post was peened down and mushroomed over to hold the snap in place.  That is what is holding the two parts together.  You'll have to figure out a way to cut off the mushroomed part to separate the two (dremel tool?).  Unfortunately at that point the backer is toast and will no longer work, so you'll need to find a replacement.

Tandy Leather carries snaps, hopefully the same size.

To put it back on, cut the hole in the leather where you want it and push the backer post thru the hole.  Then place the female button on the post, and then using a punch peen it down until it is tight.  Tandy Leather should have the punch, and whatever else you might need.  Hell, they might even show you how to do this.

Hopefully this makes sense.
Life is hard.  It's harder if you're stupid and can't shoot straight.

Yeah I went down to Tandy's to see what my options were but the guy working said he would only sell me the supplies, not show me how to use them. Normally I'm a DIY guy but 'd rather not screw up my favorite holster due to my lack of experience.

Snaps are easy to set.  I have some leather working to get done this weekend - if I have time I'll make a quick "Here's how to set a snap" youtube video.  If pizza night was still going we could meet there and do it.

Actually, in the sober light of not 1:30am there is a critical components I missed:

Thumb snap holsters often have a re-enforcing bracket on the female side that's pinned in place in addition to the snap.  So, setting a snap is easy, but you'd have to drill out the existing hardware and set a rivet in addition to the snap.
