Asolo Fugitive GTX Boots
« on: July 18, 2008, 09:40:26 AM »
Item being reviewed: Asolo Fugitives GTX
Description of item: Lightweight synthetic and split-grain leather uppers, Gore-Tex lined.

I've had these boots for 2 years now and have logged hundred of miles in them from climbing several of the tallest peaks in the west (Mt Whitney, Boundary Peak, Mt. Borah, etc) to snowshoeing, rock climbing as well as all my backbacking trips (which has been many).  REI has them listed as a 'light hiking' boot, but they'll take much more abuse than what the REI website suggests.  Sizing seems true to size for me...I wear a solid 12 in nearly every shoe/boot I buy (except combat boots) and got a 12 in these and they fit perfect.  I've heard that many people like to go a half size smaller than normal, but this was not the case for me.  Just keep that in mind if you try a pair on.

Description of review tests:  Used on all my backcountry adventures over the past two years which includes lots of dirt, mud and granite terrain.
Pros: Very lightweight, waterproof, good lace up system, little to no break in period.
Cons:  If you use the boots as they were designed (i.e. no snowshoeing or rock climbing) it's hard to find fault in these boots.  While the Fugitives can be used for mountaineering in dry/summer months that require a long distance traveled a stiffer sole may be wanted (Mt. Whitney - 22miles in that terrain hurts your feet afterward).  But again, that is beyond 'light hiking'
Best Uses: Light to medium hiking and backpacking.
Duration Used: 2 years
Where purchased:  REI, Boise
Cost: $185 range
Rating: 5
