can you over prep?
« on: December 05, 2011, 06:27:39 AM »
I am wondering if there is such a thing as over prepping.  I know this sounds silly but specifically I am wondering if prepping for radiation is too far.  The reason I am questioning is, will there be anything left worth having.  It appears that even a "mild" nuclear accident that is close enough that prepping would be useful, would be bad enough to make things not worth coming back to.  An actual nuclear attack would make things so toxic that a lifetime in a plastic suit would be the best outlook.

On the other hand there are plenty of examples that seem to go to the contrary.  Looking at many "disaster" areas it would appear that unless you are directly inside the area you will thrive.

Just looking for other's opinions before we dump a bunch of cash into prepping for the "worst"
lets meet face to face sometime.

Full out nuclear war, mushroom clouds sprouting all over... probably not worth preparing for unless you have an underground base with a recycling plant, hydroponic garden, perpetual motion machine to run a generator, et cetera, et cetera.
Regular radiation shit like after the Japan earthquake... maybe.
Assess your area for likely radiation sources. Do you live near INEL or another facility like it? If so then it may not be too 'out there' to take some precautions. If not, then maybe a tad too far when the money spent for a full NCB suit for each family member could go further and better in other preps like larger water purification system, long(er) term food storage, long term medical supplies, and stuff like that.
Just my 2/100 of a FRN.
If you were to take all the elephants presently alive on this planet and string them, trunk to tail, between the earth and the moon, they would all die.

.... a lifetime in a plastic suit would be the best outlook.

...

This isn't a likely outcome under the worst situation...

Maybe if you lived next to a major target that recieved several nukes at once....but then would you even live thru that?

Odds are you shelter time would be a few weeks at most. living in Boise and the surround country side. This is very do able.

plenty of sheltering in place info out there.
