New gun, not sure what I think...
« on: December 01, 2011, 04:47:35 PM »
So I got this new gun last night, a Glock 34, brand new, hasn't ever been shot... and I'm thinking, this is cool, got a new gun and I'll shoot it a little bit and see how I like it.

But after playing with it last night, I'm not even sure I want to keep the thing.  ??? It's a Glock, I'm not a fan, that much is no surprise, but hey, it's a gun that I got off a prize table and that's cool and all, but now that I've actually sat around for a couple of hours fondling the thing, I'm just not that impressed with it. I know it will shoot, but the trigger sucks, the sights are plastic and I really hate how it sounds when I rack the slide.

I'm thinking it's going to take $300-400 to get a good trigger system, sights and get the holster/mag setup so I can shoot it and I wonder if it's worth it.

So I'm not really asking what I should do, just kinda of lamenting the fact I've got this gun that I'm not sure I like and thinking I should just sell it since it's new and put it toward something I really would like or want, gun related of course, or maybe I should set it up as nice little shooter and see how it treats me.

I know, this thread doesn't have the excitement of the ins and outs of the constitution or the cloud of mystery over the latest conspiracy theory, or even the humor of hearing about the dog that shot his owner, but it's one of those days that I'm just sitting here thinking, you know, I'm done for the day and I should just go home.

Trigger job:  $.25 worth of polishing + $20 for a 3.5 lb connector + $5 for a 6 lb trigger spring = $26.25

Holster:  Uncle Mikes (the barrel will stick out the end, but so what?) = $20

Mag Pouches:  check the fit of your COM mag pouches.  The Safariland 771's that I have for my STI will pull double duty on Glock mags.  So will the ones I have from Comp-Tac that I use for IDPA.  = $0

Belt:  I'm pretty sure you already have one  = $0

Sights:  Warren-Sevigney or Dawson-Heinie combo = $80-ish
http://www.dawsonprecision.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=SIGHT+SETS:Glock+Sight+Sets

Mags:  You'll want 3 extended mags @ $35-ish/each for the Arredondo or Dawson mag extensions 3 x $35 = $105
Or run production with 17 rnd G17 mags = $0

Magwell:  Dawson ICE = $80
Or do without = $0

Give it some time.  Glocks grow on you.  Besides, its never a bad thing to have a Glock in a bag/car/bed stand.
Life is hard.  It's harder if you're stupid and can't shoot straight.

That's silly, ignore ekuo as you're obviously going to hate it and you should make me a really awesome deal on it.  ;D  I am an unabashed glock fanboy so it would have a loving home.

as far as the glock...Have you shot them much?

as you may have found out, the grip angle will put the muzzle in the air vs a 1911
tons of mods out for that platform, and the nice thing is they require little smithing skills

I have a couple & trust my life to them...have a Gen4 G26 as a current favorite carry gun.

but if you are not a fan trade the gun in before you shoot it for something you can bond with

BK,
You can get the triggers to a decent level with little work and some cheap, quality parts as Evans pointed out.

I have a 17 with a really decent 3 -3.5lb trigger and it shoots well enough for what we do. I have a 19 with a little heavier trigger and again it works but the grip is too short so I get bit on mag changes. I have a little 27 that will just pound down a piece of steel with the 4.5trigger and it carries nicely in the pocket of my parka. I've done the Dawson/Sevigney sights on all but the 27.  But, I still can't commit to the Glocks.

Being a 1911 guy, youmay likely remain unsatisfied with the trigger. I know I am. Having shot 1911's and revolvers all of my life I am spoiled when it comes to triggers and the level of accuracy a great trigger provides.

I think the last shot I fired with my 1911 was a week or so back. I was playing a game of HORSE with some forum members. My last hit was at about 180yds on a steel silhouette. Game over!  ;)

To my friends' credit and my dismay, none of their Glocks KABOOMED. After their Glocks crapped out at distance, they were also able to make hits to about 150yds with my 1911. These were obviously skilled shooter with clearly inferior equipment.

You monster!  You can't mock the superiority of the G19!  I will readily admit that the trigger doesn't compare to a 1911, yours was quite nice to shoot.

Wow, guess I was wrong. This did turn into an interesting thread, thanks jmack and lp :o

So I thought about getting it out again tonight and petting it, see if any of the glock love would rub off on me...but I ended up at hawktech feeling up some black rifles with really smooth handguards and nice lines.

Rg got me thinking about my 1911's again, doesn't take much, so anyways I'm thinking about next years 45 match and I like the idea of shooting at distance with a 45 so I might have to come up with a stage that does that.

So back to my being uncomfortable with a glock, I'm not racist, I do have several guns that are dark colored, and I do like them. I pulled the xd out and held it for a while, it felt good, better than the glock.

So anyway, enough of this little stream of thoughtlessness, btw tony Stewart won the NASCAR sprint cup series, so I'm thinking maybe I'll just watch the rest of what not to wear and think about it more tomorrow.

pfffft

If I can shoot it, so can you.
Glock's are the perfect 3 gun pistol.
when your done with the pistol section and you have to dump your gun, you can just throw it down and move on. No safety to engage or worry of it AD'ing. Plus Glocks look better with battle scars.

Seriously though, I think working the Glock trigger all summer made me a better shooter. I think I was a little spoiled with 1911 triggers.

Suck it up and run that new heater!

Several years ago I bought a Glock just to shoot the Glock's Only match. So there you go, your pistol now has a special purpose.
Then get a gemtech tundra and a LW threaded barrel and bam, er, I meam, shhuhsh - dedicated suppressed gun.

BK,

Before you sell that thing, take Jaggy's out for a test drive. I hate most Glocks ; they
feel like a brick of wood in my hand and have a trigger that feels like its hooked to the e-brake on my truck.
However, Jaggy modded his and it feels pretty good.  I would run it if it were given to me.
And this is coming from a guy that sold all his pistols and replaced them all with Tanfoglios.. :)

This is exactly why I have my browser set to show the url of a link if I hover the mouse over it. I saw that url and said 'whoaaa no thanks'

I'd like to win a gun! I'd like to have a Glock for the glock match! I'd like to have a 1911 .45 for the 1911 match! I don't have much but I'm working on it. Building the AR is not cheap. It was that or 1911 the wife said so you know which one I picked. I agree with most of the other guys and make the mods and shoot it. My S&W M&P 9pro took a few mods but works great. Has a better grip angle than the Glock I think.

Best thing about owning a Glock is that if you have to shoot someone with it you don't feel bad throwing it off a bridge in the middle of the night , and if you ever find it again it will probably function about as well as it did before you through it off the bridge .

I own several just because they seem to work all the time no matter how much I hate them .

I think I know what is going on BK. You have long ago made up your mind that you don't like Glocks, and now that you own one and could go shoot it you have a fear that you could end up liking it.

I actually borrowed a XDM for a while, let it sit in my safe for over a month before I took it out for test run. Before shooting it I had visions of all the gear I would have to buy to switch to the XDM. Actually shooting it next to my Glock 34 left me just wanting to stay with the 34.

In the end I think you will find enough reasons to stay with the platforms you already shoot.

It's a Glock thread so even if it's a little off topic here goes.
