Updated Notices of Range Visits
« on: July 17, 2008, 03:05:32 AM »
Because I go to the range 2 or 3 times a week, I figured I would post this up and keep it up to date just in case anyone wants to join in on the fun! It would be nice to meet some of the others I argue with on this forum. ;)

All dates will be at the Blacks Creek Open Range location, not the Blacks Creek sanctioned pay-to-shoot range, unless otherwise noted. To get there if you are taking I-84 East, take Exit 64 and turn right. Follow the road past the stop sign at the railroad tracks until the road curves left then right again and goes uphill. There are two options to get in, either go straight instead of taking the curve up the hill onto the dirt road, or take the entrance I use (because its more fun) that is at the top of the uphill and to your right.

Both will take you north into the range area, I usually follow the trail across the rock bed where there used to be water, and park in that area. Unless otherwise noted I will always be onsite at or before the posted time, I will usually be in a green Subaru Forester with yellow State Search&Rescue placards.

I will always have some metallic targets, but feel free to also bring your own. If you have any questions, need any other details or driving directions, send me a PM and I will give you my cell phone number.

I am planning on going again this Saturday after the OCDO OC event. I would like to get out there at 8PM this time, I've never gone night shooting before and I figure this would be a good time to practice some combatlight situations...

So that's what ocdo oc is about.  A litter pick-up by shooters, One Carries Double Out Or Ceases  ;D

Haha, yeah. I think OCDO stands for "opencarry.org" or "Open Carry Dot Org".

Then again I could be FOS.

Here is the first turn off at the bottom of the hill:

Here is the second turn off:

Here is the shooting area where I am at usually:
(The area that forms a triangle...)

It is before the pay range, which I have never actually been to, nor knew it actually existed until just a year ago...

I'm planning on heading out there again this Saturday...but if I don't hear from any other shooters or can't get anyone else, I will just cancel...

I give it about a week or so until my Glock gets here, I am dwindling down on ammo so I can hold my fun (as painful as its going to be) until this upcoming Saturday, the 26th. Or as soon as it decides to get here.

The seller is a dick, and wants $35 for shipping across one state, and wants payment in cash. Oh well, it's still a good deal.

So until further notice, the next time I will be heading out is the 26th.

Scratch that thing about the 26th....

...my new Glock should be here next Tuesday or Wednesday, so I am planning on heading out to Blacks Creek then, I am going to be really loading up this time, bring some things out there to do some scenario shooting, including cars.  ;D

I will probably go around 4PM on Tuesday if the Glock makes it in ontime. Anyone game?

We just cant stand the thought of having to pay to use the range. I know, they are nice. If we are going to shoot pistol we have a free range and rifle, well we just go out to the MPRC. Its a couple miles further but you can shoot whistle pigs and paper lol. Not to mention a little more private and imho safer for us.

Just my opinion

The MPRC?  Where/what is that?

By the way - while there is the "pay" range, Brian has directions to the "non-pay" area as well, which is before the pay area.  I went there last weekend.  Good spot to shoot.

Is this open to the public or just military and LE?  I googled the OTA and it looks like it's all guard stuff going on out there.  :(

the guard leases it, it is public land! you can shoot out there. The only thing that might be of concern would be an active military operation in your area. In that case a polite MP will come over and ask if you would please move to the other side of the main road (pleasant valley road) They are more than aware its public land. You can go out beyond the little bridge and go right or left. I prefer to go out to the fork, bear left until  I hit a stream-bed and go to the left from there. very remote and very private. a nice long ditch canal that you can put metal pop-ups or paper into and send the boys practice drills. The only thing you could do "wrong" and I say this lightly, if you go out to where the main road splits, it goes to live fire area. I don't mean small arms live fire, I mean tanks, and artillery. Although it is public land it is clearly marked IMPACT AREA and not safe. There is unexploded ordinance out there dating back to world war I. You can go out and drive the road all around the OTA, I have been known to take my boys out there to cindercone and watch the tanks fire at night (very cool) but they will let you know if they are doing something dangerous. They also dont appreciate you shooting around any buildings (there are structures on the ranges) and you cant use the range they have established out there (pretty obvious because they have signs) However, you will find plent of nice areas with backstop and terrain features if you just go beyond the little yuppie- shoot, trash, and leave shooting areas!

Find attached a shot from one of the spots we go to out there. Note this photo was taken a couple year ago and at the time it was a mess. Several of us have taken the time to haul out trash (fridges, washers, real junk) and since then this particular area has stayed much cleaner. Since then we have started going to a much more remote location where we take out what we take in.

I have never been to that range, I'm most comfortable with the Blacks Creek area, but I am open to checking out any other area you think is worthwhile. Do you have directions to the site?

The dates are still up in the air, not sure how long its going to be before my new Glock gets in, I would assume within a week.

If it's the same place I'm thinking of, I usually get there by heading South on Cloverdale until you hit Kuna-Mora road.  Take a left (East) until you get to Pleasant Valley.  Turn right (South) and you will eventually go off pavement.  Continue on until you reach the steel power towers.  You should see a sign posted but pretty much everything South of the towers is fair game.  We've gone out there a number of times with our shotguns for clays and bring the pistols along for other random targets we can find at home.

Oh yeah I know that place...it's at least easier to find brass.  ;D

My fault.  When I was reorganizing stuff I dropped it here for some reason.  I'm not sure where it really belongs except maybe Miscellaneous.  I'll move it there and leave a message pointing to it.  If you think it should be someplace else let me know.

what time do u think you will be out there?
The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.
