What would it take to build the ultimate 10-22?
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:09:18 AM »
I searched the site and couldn't find a thread like this, so I thought I'd ask. I saw the base gun on sale for 170 at Cabelas on black Friday, but figure if you *have* to upgrade the barrel and stock anyways, why buy the whole gun in the first place? So what are the absolute necessities if I wanted to build the ultimately accurate 10-22? One more question- would anyone recommend going with the m&p 15-22 instead? As always, I REALLY appreciate everyone's help.

A trip to Hawktech is what it would take to build the ultimate 10/22  ;D seriously... he's got it all, and knows he's stuff.

Nothing wrong with a M&P 22, but that wouldn't be my choice for an ultimate .22... Go see Dan!

I would stick with the 10/22 platform. Probably the most upgradable rifle ever. I looked at the M&P but just not as many accessories or upgrades to make it worthwhile. Now with Ruger making one hell of a decent 25 round factory mag you can't beat it.

Me, I went with the Tactical Solutions X-ring platform, very accurate and reliable. That, or go see Dan at Hawktech. He is very knowledgeable, and has most everything you need in stock. the new PWS T3 barrel rocks by the way! I need to get me one of those!

What’s your budget?
You can build $1500.00 10/22”s with no Ruger parts and $1500.00 optics.
You can also build a tuned 100% factory Ruger 10/22 with $170.00 optic that will shoot with the above gun, it all comes down to budget and want.

I have some of each I could drop off @ Hawktech for you to check out.

What is the ultimate .22's purpose?
For Jmack it may be a long range practice rifle.
For me it would be a 3gun practice rifle that I would probably fall on, drop or smash repeatedly on things. For me having the same style magazine is key.

for a 10/22 I like the xring. built in rail and the dual bolt guide is pretty briliant.

For 3gun practice the m&p is ok. too light and I don't use a quad rail. Tacsol conversion is better for my  needs. The M&P is a shooter though.
They call me "Double J"

Not sure that one has to upgrade the barrel. Like many rifles sometimes you luck out and get a good barrel. Sometimes even free floating is not an absolute necessity.
Careful selection and sorting, weight and rim thickness, of ammunition often shows greater gains in accuracy, but only practical experience with your rifle will tell.
Trigger work is a necessity on the stock 10/22 and bedding the action can't hurt.
Beyond that it depends on how you define "ultimate", and how many Federal Reserve Notes you are willing to put into it.

For me it was a 3x9 scope, rings and base on a bone stock stainless with black plastic stock. Mine does everything I want...

+1 Hawktech
+1 10-22

I'm using a 20 year old receiver with TacSol bbl and PWS Predator stock.  It's fast and accurate if I do my part.

Live the build!

So if your not stuck on the semi-auto, scratch that and look at the PWS Summit Rifle.
This is one of the most accurate rimfire rifles, I've ever seen.

At least look at one, be careful though - it's awesome - well if you like little ragged holes?
