Do you need to use bullets with a cannelure in a wheel-gun?
« on: November 22, 2011, 12:12:56 PM »
So I'm thinking of getting one of those really old style guns that has the big spinny thing in the middle of it. I think they call it a "revolver".  Its in .454 Casull.
Anyway, do I need to reload bullets with a cannelure, or can I reload smooth bullets.  I read something saying you could get set-back if you don't use a cannelure, but that doesn't seem right.
Seems like a nice roll crimp that digs into the jacket would keep stuff in place ok..?

with the 454 your more likley to get bullet jump under recoil werre the bullet moves forward possibley sticks out and ties up the cylinder
but weather thers a cannelure or not you still would be roll crimpin

Cannelure or crimp groove is a must for the 454.

How about for milder loads?  Something similar to a .45 LC or .44 Special ?
Honestly I probably won't be loading that thing to .454 Casull standards most of the time.  I was hoping to use some of my .45 Auto bullets and make something that won't rip my hand off.. ;)

.45 Auto = .451"

You probably don't want to use those in your .454.

I hope you guys are joking.  .001" is more than close enough... :)

Unless wheel guns need to have much tighter tolerances, but then why would they make .451" bullets for .45 LC??

.451 for jacketed and .452 for lead in the .454, same as the 45acp and 45colt

.458 for jacketed and .459 for lead in the 45/70 and .458win mag

Are you seeing a couple of trends here ???

Depending on the bullet and load you can vary the crimp. For light stuff a tight case to bullet fit will work, you just need to turn the bell back to a straight profile or roll it a bit. For the heavies, a tight fit and a significant roll crimp not only help keep the bullets from walking forward and tying up the cylinder, it helps with more consistent ignition.
