Which Would You Choose and Why?
« on: November 19, 2011, 01:41:20 PM »
Which of these two rifle setups would you consider better for HD/civil unrest and why?:

STG-556 w/Aimpoint Micro and top-mounted TLR-1 taclight.
Pros: Appx 8oz lighter, adjustable reticle brightness for all lighting conditions, stronger taclight mounting location, bbl shadow is at 6 o'clock.
Cons: Micro's 20mm tube is slower to acquire and less forgiving of imperfect cheekweld, needs batteries, TLR-1's constant-on rocker switch not easily accessible.

STG-556 w/Trijicon RX30 and slide-mounted TLR-1 taclight.
Pros: RX30 is fast to acquire & more forgiving of imperfect cheekweld due to FOV through the huge 42mm objective, no batteries/switches/brightness adjustments to worry about (very KISS, just pick it up and use it), TLR-1's constant-on rocker switch accessible to trigger finger w/o changing grip.
Cons: RX30's reticle can wash out under certain lighting conditions (hence the Magpul MBUS front sight), reticle brightness not user-determined, taclight sidemount location not as strong as top optic rail location, 9 o'clock bbl shadow, appx 8oz heavier.

Tomac, I prefer the second configuration but I'd dump the RX30 and go with the Aimpoint Micro which I think is the superior optic and saves weight. I really like the idea of the MBUS front flip up and the option to use the RDS as a ghost ring if necessary. Best of both worlds as the TLR-1's rocker switch is accessible to your trigger finger as you said.

Just wait 'til I get my 870 Bullpup conversion (I'll post about), same length as my STG's but w/an 18.5" bbl!
Yeah, it's between the Micro and the RX30, I like both for different reasons, guess I've got some thinkin' to do. Thx!...
