Does Del-Ton make a good product?
« on: November 17, 2011, 04:57:20 PM »
Hi guys, I'm going to be building my first AR here come tax time, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with Del-Ton uppers. I decided to go with a 16" mid length lightweight complete upper with a YHM free floating fore end and someone on a different forum told me I should go with a Spike's upper instead, stating del-ton makes low quality products, thought I would get a second opinion...

I would get an Armalite upper before a Spikes.

I had a Del-ton middy until my brother's wife decided she had to have it, my son has a middy, and several of my friends have them.  They have worked well for us.

If you’re looking to save money on a quality rifle, buy a factory rifle they can build and sell it cheaper than you!

If you’re looking for a quality rifle, buy a factory rifle they have all the proper tools and more experience and build a better rifle than most home builders.

If you’re bent on building a home built rifle as a labor of love then I would suggest you head to one of the local guys shops and talk to them about your project objectives and let them walk you through the process and stay away from the mail order for your first build.

I had a Del-ton and it worked great for me. I only put about 3000 rounds through it though.
I sold it a little while ago to buy some smith & wessons.

I have one that's always worked has about 1k on it I'd guess. I got a bcm upper as my last one if that tells you anything. If you could afford a little more there are better options out there.

I have a delton lower.
Unless it's billet a lower is a lower in my opinion.

Upper is where the magic happens. As others have said, there are a ton of options that may not be much more. ( I run a BCM upper as well)

I like Jmack's suggestion too. In addition to Sawtac and Hawktec, there are some other shops that have some great options in stock as well.
Ambush Tactical has a pretty sweet M&P 15 that comes with a troy battle rail.

If your not in a hurry, come out to the new years day shoot and check out a ton of little black rifles, and see them in action.
They call me "Double J"

The most imprtant thing I think in a lower is that it fits you well and it has a good trigger. Fit is really important though.

Hey, RK, you didn't mention that when you did my del-ton's trigger!  I'll forgive you, but forgive me when I bring it up with the next trigger job I get!  ;D
For 629.00, the del-ton is a cheaper rifle, but it has been great for me.  I'm surprised you didn't mention DPMS under the "almost as bad as" comparisons.  I do have one of those, and it is a true pile of ass...
