Pitted/textured brass still ok?
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:00:05 PM »
I had some fairly dirty brass and experimented a little with the cleaning media.  I added a bit of rock polishing compound to the cob mix to see if it would scrub and polish.  It did a great job at cleaning the brass but left the shells dull with a light stippling texture.  I noticed it was much harder to size than the other smooth, shiny brass.  The two pics below show as best I can get with the cam.  They easily chamber and extract right now, but I'm afraid once they expand after firing that it will be much harder to extract.  Should it make a difference?  Should I just toss them and start over?

I clean with the Stainless Steel shot and my shells have a bit more texture that the ones pictured.
I say load and shoot some but they look OK to me.

+1 they don't look like you need to worry about (but if they do blow 1/2 your face off I didn't say shit) they'll be fine.

Not worried about them blowing up on me ;)

No they don't look bad even up close.  What had me wondering, since they are not smooth and shiny anymore, is when I was sizing them they tended to stick in the die even with a good amount of lube.  I don't think I had that issue with the "normal" brass and it concerned me that the minimal texturing was enough to bind it more.  Now that they are sized they cycle fine in the rifle, but I was not sure what would happen when I fired them.  Sounds like I can give it a try.

Try some lube on a Q-tip inside the necks to see if this helps.
Clean brass always hangs on my expander more than dirty so I'll lube inside the neck one in ten  as I'm sizing clean brass.

Have you tried the Cabelas polish in your cob?  It makes stuff super shiny. :)

I have a little 35mm film canister with 1/4" of graphite in the bottom for lubing necks. This is the stuff that comes in a tube for dry lubricating door locks and such. I don't want any wet lube inside the case. I dip every 3rd or 4th case in the graphite or whenever they start getting sticky coming out of the sizing die.

I assumed everyone cleaned their brass after sizing and you know what happens when I assume. ::)
FJ's right about the wet lube if you don't clean after you size is bad Ju-Ju with powder.

Depends on what I'm loading. Sometimes I do tumble after. Still don't put anything wet inside the case. Habit. Back in the day I used Hornady lube and it specifically said not to get it inside the case and to wash your hands in between ops so as not to contaminate primers or powder with lube. My brother skipped this step one time and about a year later had a .308 with a 2-3 second hang fire. Scary. Fizzle, fizzle, fizzle, BOOM! Not fun.
