Do preppers look long term?
« on: November 14, 2011, 06:12:58 PM »
So i grew up in a family that looked to the long term, in addition to the short term.  Is this common among preppers?  From what I have seen most preppers are ready for the next 2 weeks all the way up to the next 4 years, however they seem to lack long term goals.  What are your thoughts for the next generation?  thanks, and have a great day.
lets meet face to face sometime.

tried to teach my kids( and lead by example) to shoot and maintain weapons, think for themselves and outside the box and never quit. Showing them now how mom and pops store food.
Good start IMHO.

Storing is a good idea, for the short term.  Meaning a year or two.  True long prepping requires the ability to generate your own food after the storage begins to shrink.  ie: gardens that can reseed, cattle, chickens and pork. Never hurts to understand how to grow and grind wheat, make butter, cheese, ect.  Anyway, that's my take and that's what I'm striving to achieve, and making good progress too.

Preps are hedges against hard times, they aren't the end-all of survival.  2Big is right - The long term knowledge is worthwhile (and honestly, it's fun as a hobby.)

Funny how all the "prepping" we are striving for, learning canning, farm management, animal health and breeding, scratch baking, home medical remedies, and so on were all just normal everyday life a hundred years ago, and all of history before that.  Today, it seems like we have to almost de-evolve back to the basics.  Industry has built a dependency, with that, self sufficiency seems almost a foreign concept although, it's gaining allot of ground in recent administrative cycles.
Such a structure has taken shape that all our needs are provided for a fee.  Food, housing, transportation, health, hobby, entertainment, energy, and for every whim, there's a retailer.  As such, we must work harder, longer, and for more to maintain our (perceived) necessities as this artificial system begins to break down.  Self reliance is en-grained into us very deeply.  Free men struggle with this level of dependency and monetary slavery.  (at least I do)
Like stretching a rubber band, at some point it will break, or snap back.  Either way, it might sting a little but it's the natural course of our existence.  We've bought into a fantasy built on mounting debt and promises backed by nothing but confidence in it as a foundation.  The global financial community is losing that confidence at an accelerating rate.  Print more to make up the difference, the market becomes diluted and prices rise however, income does not.  Everyone knows this is not sustainable, EVERYONE!
Those who are prepping have realized this, those who are not prepping, will soon.    Idol is over but stay tuned, a reality show is about to begin.   (that's just MO, I could be way off)

I totally agree with your statement and voluntary simplicity is a concept we should implore. We spend more time commuting and working to achieve monetary gains to purchase the so called "modern conveniences" in order to make our lives easier. What a freak'in joke, I should have been a farmer.

It wasn't all that long ago for some of us.  ;)

cattle, horses, chickens, sheep.  Gardens, orchards, berry bush field, herb field, pond development - looking to stock with perch next spring. One kid has become an expert on local plants and what can be done with them medically and how to use them for food and medicine.

One more spring and summer is all I ask for time to finish putting things in place.

It takes time and lots of phyiscal labor. Much more than time than you would think to build and put into place everything you need to have a long term survival place.

I will... I still want the kids to work on some 10-22's with you.

I may be moving to ND or WY soon...work in the oil field, making some coin to continue stocking up on preps.

Depression (or worse )  is coming.
