Glock mags stopped dropping free
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:18:35 PM »
thought I would share this with the group,
The last few outings I have had some trouble with my mag changes so I thought I would take a look at my mags to see what the issue was.
Here is what I noticed, my mags had developed a decent sized lip on the magazine ejector notch.
The excess material was causing some drag on my mags during release and causing them to catch and hang in the pistol.

I have only had this pistol for about 5 months, I'm estimating the round count around 7k.

I chased the edges with a file and trimmed with a sharp knife.
Seems to have solved the issue.

Anyone else notice this issue? If so, what round count?

Standby while I replace my ejector without having to get out a file.

I saw some peening on my 10mm mags (only) where material was sticking out like this and causing drag.  I guess the 10mm beats the mags up pretty bad, as I only had probably 800 rounds through the worst mag.  I filed down the excess material that was spreading out of the mag catch slot.

Well most antiques usually sit inside a glass case and don't get much action, so I'm sure that's true... ;)

all in all it took me about 10 minutes to shape up 4 mags.
I'll admit I beat the mags into the pistol.
If that's all the maintenance I have to do, to continue executing mag changes and take advantage of my favorite Glock feature... (the auto slide release) It's well worth the work.
My ONE NINE ELEVEN on the other hand... I am on my 3rd ejector in slightly more rounds and as Emanthy pointed out... Considerably more work to resolve.
I think my last ejector took me an hour to install. I hope it lasts a while!

I love my single stacks, but trust my Glock.

Can't resist anymore Jaggy
You know I love my Glock as well....maybe these other..."shooters" and I do use the term loosely cause where are all these afficianados, not at the shooting matches that WE shot at, love to talk out their ass. You handled your Glock issue perfectly, no gun is perfect, least of all the 1911's, we build custom guns all the time and when these armchair gunsmiths and armorers work on guns they cause more grief then cure. Thats not my opinion thats the facts as they walk in the door, keeps us working and love to meet the lads. Now that being said, to all you gun gurus out there, keep working on your stuff, keep learning, keep making mistakes, thats how the gun biz grows and prospers, I don't know everything so we can learn from you as well. Want to talk guns, real talk, stop in the shop, coffee is on.

Thread Drift:  Jaggy, if you're on your 3rd 1911 ejector, something is wrong.  One going bad: OK, bad part maybe, it happens.  Two going bad: hmmm, you could be the recipient of two bad parts you poor bastid.  Three going bad?  Something else is causing failure.

I would go looking for the cause of that failure.

I agree evans.
the first one lasted quite a while, the second needed to be undercut but wasn't until the damage was done. I barely made it through state this year. It was also an emergency fix from a friends spare parts bin. So I really shouldn't complain about its short life.
My 3rd and current is a new design for the 9mm 1911. Its much shorter like what STI has gone to.
It's a rolled steel part that I took extra time to fit. It's in nice and tight and doesn't impact the top round in the magazine like the longer design did.
I have a good feeling about it. I have only funtion tested it so far.
maybee at the scored match this moth, I will run a little Single Stack.
Bring your Trojan and you I and Scott can join Tommy and Garry for a Single Stack Super Squad!

Actually, I plan to shoot SS for the next few matches to get tuned up for Utah State.  Hey why not: the 1911 is the Utah state gun, its the Utah State match, and this is the 100 yr since the 1911 came into being.

Its a 1911-thing.

Thread-drift OFF

Back on topic:  Have you inspected the mag  catch on your G34?  If the mags have that kind of deformation, what does the part that is causing the deforming look like?

The mag catch looks good. I think the mags are taking the brunt of it.

Back to that Utah match... When is that? I might be down for a little road trip...

You're too late.  The UT State Match sold out in early Oct.  But the same club is hosting the 2012 Area 1 Match, and they are guaranteeing that all Area 1 residents who apply prior to Dec will get a slot.  After that it opens up to all the other Areas.  With St. George being so close to AZ and SoCal, I'm sure a bunch of Area 2 shooters are waiting for it to open up.  So for A1 folks, best register now while you can get a slot.

I feel like I'm missing a good Glock Bash

When you put enough rounds thru any gun, it's bound to develop a little wear here and there. Looking at my guns I see a lot of holster wear, kinda like the look of that. Even have a few dings here and there from crashing into barricades, etc...

A gun is a tool, use it and you will eventually have to do some maintenance on it. I've got somewhere around 20k thru my 1911, and maybe out of the 20k I've got a couple of mags of problems... most due to my idiot brain and not doing something right at the reloading bench. My latest gun the 2011 only has about 2k thru it, however that was 2k in about a 1 month time span this summer, with about 5 rounds that didn't go bang... again my fault not the guns. That gun ran with a broken ejector for I don't know how long, till I pulled it apart to clean and it fell off... easy fix and it was back up and going.

All that to say, I trust any one of my guns, especially with factory ammo, as any issue I've had with my gun or mags have always been with my reloads and not factory ammo.

Man, I gotta get back out at the range, this whole work thing is a drag.

Was good to see you back out for a 3 gun Brian!
Hopefully you can join us a little more regularly in the near future.
It is interesting how each system has its strengths and weaknesses. This issue caught me off guard and I was a bit surprised the mags had mushroomed that bad before I noticed.

Based on your broken ejector episode I do a thorough cleaning before any major event for an inspection if for nothing else.
I listen now and then...  ;D
