Buffer Tube question
« on: October 27, 2011, 04:30:43 PM »
I'm looking at my first AR-15 build, and I have a question maybe you guys can answer for me. I'm building a mil spec BCM upper with a DD parts kit and a stripped lower, I don't know what one yet, and i was looking at the difference between mil spec and commercial buffer tubes. Now I understand that most people will recommend mill spec, but... I have a commercial style collapsable stock with 6 positions on my .22, and I am most comfortable using the second position, being 5'6", it seems to fit best. Looking at the mil spec tubes, they only have 4 positions, and they have a gap missing positions 2 and probably 6.  Is it bad for me to want to get the commercial tube just for the second position that is missing in the mil spec version? Do I have my info wrong? The stock I use is a Tapco heavy .920  stock, it has 6 positions so I'm assuming that its commercial.

The milspec tubes I have don't have a missing position.

If you have a commercial stock you like then just use it.  No reason to go milspec unless you want to use a different stock.

I believe there's a size difference.

If you were to take all the elephants presently alive on this planet and string them, trunk to tail, between the earth and the moon, they would all die.

Hey that looks just like the picture he posted in his original message!

When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice, for I am a hunter,
And I must have my freedom.

Difference in size between commercial and milspec only matters if you have a stock that is made for the different tube size.  I think a commercial stock will fit a milspec tube, but not the other way around, right?

It will "fit" but rattle because it's too loose.

This seems like the same case as someone saying that they want a handgun of a certain caliber because people recommend it even though its terribly uncomfortable. My say would be get what you're going to be comfortable shooting. Doesn't matter how great a product is if you can't use it and be successful with it. I've used mil spec, the new ar I just built is commercial and I have the magpul prs stock. I see no real difference (though I will admit when you put a $200 stock on it better be solid).
No, I know exactly what I'm doing, I just have no clue what effect it will have!
