Police officer question
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:06:26 AM »
My brother is an ex MP in the marines, then a police officer in AZ. He has just recently moved up here and is now a DOD series 0083 police officer. He would like to know if he is required to get a concealed weapons license or does him being a police officer allow him to carry concealed off duty? He is traveling on vacation in Poky so didn't have a chance to ask his superiors. Any help? Thanks

Sworn LEO's, active or retired, are allowed to carry without a state issued CWP.  They are required to have a current agency issued photo ID.  This allows nationwide carry (theoretically).  I would not want to be the test bunny in NJ, NY, DC or the like.  Having a CWP speeds up the firearm purchase process by skipping the short background check.  That's my understanding and is in no way put forth as  legal advice.

I am not sure what a DOD series 0083 Police Officer is...
That being said, as a Police Officer myself if I came across him and he had his LE ID on him, I would consider that more than good.
I would also imagine that as long as he was full time/active LE he should be covered under the federal concealed carry for LE law.

That is just my perspective though....

0083 is just the Federal Civil Service Occupational code.  When I was in aircraft maintenance, my pay grade was a WG 13, but my specialty code was 2612.

Most Air Force installations used to have rent a cops to augment the active SP force.  With the budget cuts, the AF has found that they can hire Federal DoD cops and get funding through Homeland Defense.  All they are really doing is shuffling the money from one pot to another, but I guess it looks good to the bean counters.

Make sure your brother is getting credit for his time in the Corps, it helps for vacation days as well as counts towards retirement if he "buys back" his time.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Their credentials are enough to allow national concealed carry, but it does not satisfy the requirement of bypassing the NICS check for firearms because the ID is not a universally accepted state CWL outside of the home state.
