Elk in my yard tonight
« on: October 21, 2011, 07:42:29 PM »
Some of you have been up to my place and know we have a good elk population. At 7:30 this evening, about 40 or so passed through my private shooting pit. I saw a 6 x 6 non typical and got a good picture of a 4x4. It was dark out and a cheap camera. I had to use a really long exposure and that is why it looks daylight and crappy photo. Enjoy.

Not yet. Waiting for the opening whistle. This is a common occurrence here. The come through every couple of days. They were back to 7:30 this morning and I got a good look at the 6x6. Also saw a cow with a broken leg. A little guy was eating an ipsc target right off the target stand, kinda funny. This is why I can never live in town again. Well, this and a hundred other things.

There are CCR's that say no shooting. But, people do it from time to time. I look at it as my property and a CCR is not a law, just a rule. You can not hunt up here if you don't own your own property for sure, but if you are an owner it is gray area. But generally, I don't think anyone hunts. That is why all the elk and deer come here. They know it is safe.

A friend of mine lives up there and he sends me pictures of deer and elk all the time. I would be out there with my bow for sure.

Someone poached the 6x6 this year. He was not a resident of the ranch and was parked down on Robie Creek road. I know the guy who's property he poached from. I was at home and heard a fairly loud rifle shot, louder than if coming from off the ranch. Heard another and went outside. About 400 yards downhill I could see the herd running from a bowl. Heard 7 more shots that were pretty quick. So, this idiot was hunting private land that was very well posted, No Hunting, and took 9 shots to bring down an Elk. Left the gut pile on the guys property. Someone, not me, saw him packing it out, but he did not call Fish and Game. If, I had seen him, I would have been on the phone with the Sheriff to tell them to come pickup an asshat I had at gunpoint and then called fish and game. He is very lucky he was not poaching my land, he would have been arrested at best and seriously wounded at worst, if he resisted. It's assholes like that, that feed the liberal movement the ammo they need to take our rights.

No, but can see Golden Eagle & Evergreen from my porch and that tree above your barn looked familiar...

Nah, over off Burnett dr...not quite sure if it counts as Robie Creek though, just moved here from town.

Ok. You are on that Mesa that is below us and across from the church. We go to church with the couple that lives in that funky/fancy looking house on top of that Mesa. Welcome to the area. You should love it compared to living in town. I could never live in town again.

Yep, so-far I like it.

only drawback is the dsl sucks up here....

It's Rumor'd that they may be upping it around the first of the year, but haven't heard anything concrete on that...

Looked at Wild Wisp but thier TOU is a bit overboard.....not to mention their own blog suggests they have a Lot of downtime....

We have had Wild Wisp for over 5 years. Downtime is very infrequent, maybe a few times a year and they usually get it back up really quick. A massive storm might cause a half day or day outage, but that is only every couple years. It is much faster than the dsl offered around here. They should be just a fee months away from launching an upgrade that will double the speed offered and they allow you to buy more generous bandwidth limits. We watch u-tube, have a voip phone and download DirecTV movies without issue.

My issue is with Bandwidth, My dad lives here as well and is disabled and loves to watch old Movies on Netflix all day (cant at the moment with 640k dsl...) when we were in town he would burn through roughly 4-6GB/ of bandwidth per day....

I doubt Wild Wisp's Bandwidth policy's would get along with that to well.

Yeah, 6 - 8 GB probably would not fly with Wild Wisp. DSL service out here generally sux. Needing 6 - 8 GB a day is probably not typical up in the hills, where dsl is only a couple years old. A T1 would be your best option, but would not be cheap. I did a lot of research about 3 years ago, when trying to setup a home office for remote IT work. The T1 was the only option that would work, and the quote was $400 / month. Problem for me was, the copper up here is so old, it could not reliably support a T1.

Yeah, a T1 would be a bit out of my budget  ;D

According to a local Qwest tech they might be redoing the lines and adding a dslam around the 1st of the year.

Hopefully they will actually do it.
