Ruger SR556
« on: October 18, 2011, 09:01:45 AM »
Just traded in DPMS towards a Ruger SR556 piston ar. So far quite happy with it. Put around 100 rounds through it yesterday with zero failures. It will shoot right around 1 moa, I wish I could. That will improve once I change from a battle sight to an actually scope for whistle pigs in the spring. It is a tad heavy compared to my old rifle but I like the trade off. It stays super clean in the bolt and chamber, the gas piston was very clean as well. There was very little carbon build up on the gas piston and the gas regulator. Will be shooting in 3 gun the end of the month in Parma.

Jason, I will be slow self as usual. The trigger needs to be improved, Ruger's lawyers design their triggers. A Geissele is on my christmas list.

Great looking rifle!

Take a look at the JP EZ Adjustable Trigger, its better than the Geissele in smoothness and overall travel IMHO.
I believe Travis G is using one in his AR now if you run into him at the range.

Very nice Jeff!  Look forward to seeing it in action at the end of the month!  What is the optic on it?

I ended up with the Geisselle S3G trigger on recommendations from RG.  I like it!  It was a B-day gift from my dear wife.  Got it thru the other Jeff.

That's the Burris AR 332 prism sight. Fixed three power. Works pretty good.

Does the Ruger SR556 take the AR 15 magazines, or does it require special Ruger magazines, such as the Mini 14??

Thanks.

AR mags.  When you buy one new the usually come with 3 p-mags.  ;)

Shot the gun last Saturday night at night shoot in Parma. The gun worked fine, the shooter note well. Boy do I need to get out and practice. My work schedule just doesn't allow me that much time. The fun factor is still there though.

Well, finally got out and shot the rifle with the new trigger installed. Works Great, what a difference from the factory POS trigger. My accuracy has improved and I can actually hit what I'm aiming at off hand. Clay pigeons at 30-40 yards were no problem with the iron sights now. Previously the trigger pull was heavy enough to cause frequent misses.

Very nice indeed!
You're absolutely right about Ruger triggers. A buddy of mind recently received his Ruger 1911, we fully expected a "Ruger trigger". We were amazed at a crisp 4.5lb trigger.  But Ruger certainly knows how to build a firearm. I've heard good things about that rifle.
Shoot the hell out of it and don't forget to gti the whole way!

Cheers
