Barrel Length Question for a Super Magnum 12 Guage
« on: October 16, 2011, 04:11:27 PM »
Remington 870 Super Magnum
All the super mags I've seen here in the area come configured in a 28" barrel configuration... why is this?
I'm 5'10" the 26" seems to work well for me for upland game.
I wanted to pick up a super mag for all around hunting... recommendations or explanations regarding the 28" would be greatly appreciated.
I'm new to upland game and water fowl... please fill me.

Longer barrels swing/point better.  Shorter barrels are handier.  Bird guns usually come with longer barrels, but I know a guy that bird hunts with an 18" quite well.  Purely preference.

I'm actually surprised you're not finding them with 30" barrels.  I would think a Super Magnum would come standard in that length?  28" would be the minimum in my opinion, otherwise why bother shooting a 3.5 inch round if you're not trying to reach out further to hit your game?

The only way you'd get more velocity out of a longer barrel is if you had unburned powder, which I don't think is true past 22" these days.

With standard 2.75 or 3 inch shells no, but when you jump to 3.5 inch shells it does make a difference.

I actually went on and picked up the super mag w the 28". After all discounts and remington rebates etc... 255.00!
Smokin' price and certainty couldnt pass it up. And compared to the price, even armorer pricing, for new barrels this is by far the better choice.
Already went out and fired the ole girl, 250 rounds of all lengths ... FLAWLESS!
