Thread info for newbies
« on: October 15, 2011, 09:31:23 PM »
Newbies....don't get all buttsore when you read this.  It is to help us help you.  When you ask questions about a piece of gear or a gun, there is one main question that we have to ask every time a newbie says, "What about this gizmotron?" or "I want to bolt on a super tacticool hyperparabolic night vision, whatever on to my gun. What should I use for a mount?"  So, in the interest of saving time, answer this question in your OP so we don' have to try and guess what you want to do with it.

1.  What do you plan on using it for?  Hunting?  Competition?  Sage rat shooting? Home defense?  Zombie attack?  etc. etc.

The more info you give us about what you want to do with it, the more tailored response we can give you.  I'm all about discussions, but the faster we can get to the point, the faster we can get on with pertinent information.

Mods and old timers...if there are more questions we should put in here to help this along, feel free to add to it.

I'm not oldtimer, but I think these are good advice:

1) include a budget, if pertinent

2) Never ask: "which is better?" regarding competing items that are very popular, especially if they've been on the market for a long time. If there were a clear answer, the market would reflect it. (i.e. which is better, Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22? Remington 870 or Mossberg 500?). Basically, it's like you're walking into a bar asking "Chevy or Ford?" You'll get strong opinions and decent arguments both ways, but no consensus, and the thread will probably degenerate into talk of something else. (On an internet forum, everyone has ADD and two stiff ones in 'em).

I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy sights and thy trigger, they comfort me.
