Sadly, I don't have one yet.  Just soreness, blisters, and some very wet underwear.

I'm not a hunter.  But I have a pic of the deer that committed suicide by running in front of my truck.  Hahahaa....  ;D

Cow.  Shot her at 8am.  Wasn't done packing her out until 5:30pm.

How far in did you shoot her?

Not far.  3 miles, maybe 1000' down.  The 1000' was down a steep brushy slope.  Took longest to get all the parts up that.  Way warmer day than would've been optimal.

I've turned down deer that looked like a pain to retrieve, but personally, I don't see enough elk in-season to be picky.  Especially not during a heavy brush year.

Just got back from Salmon. Productive trip. 1st evening Steph (Mrs.FJ) got this nice 4x4 at 150yds with my 6.5x55 Swede-bang flop.
[attachment=1]
I filled my X Tag on the doe that was with him with the smoke pole at 130yds. Nothing on the second day out, but on the eve of day 3 I connected on a forky at 250yds with the Swede-bang flop. 3 deer in 3 days. Couldn't tell you how many deer we saw total-hundreds, bucks by the dozens but most on the wrong side of the fence and nothing as big as the one Steph shot. She is pretty proud of it.

Nice work guys?  Novice - was that cow in the unit 39 controlled hunt?  I was out a few days ago and saw two sizable cows on the West side of hwy 21.  Ran into some deer in really heavy brush - couldn't get a clean shot.  Also saw a monster sized black bear, as well as a couple of smaller ones.  We will be heading back probably this next weekend with deer and bear tags in hand.  Pics to follow (hopefully)

Yes, it was the west of 21 controlled hunt.  And I've had the same problem with deer this year; doe tag, easy to flush, hard to see.

150yds with my 6.5x55 Swede-bang flop.

By coincidence, my cow was also with a 6.5 swede.  More of a stumble, roll, flop, but still one shot, 370 yards.  120gr ttsx handload.

Those Swedes were on to something 110 120 years ago. My load is 140grn Hornady SST at 2850fps. It's a deer killin machine. 4 bucks in 2 years, 3 out of four were bang flop DRT and the 4th made 3 bounds before falling over. I'd like to try mine on an elk, just haven't had the opportunity yet.

Yes, it was the west of 21 controlled hunt.  And I've had the same problem with deer this year; doe tag, easy to flush, hard to see.

I watched a doe walk within 30 yards of where my son was sitting on another hill about 300 yards from me... he could hear it but couldn't see the damn thing!  Since he's still a young'n he can shoot doe in the general hunt.  Boy, it was tempting to pop it!  But I was a good boy, lol.  We need those leaves to get on the ground up there so we can SEE the deer!

Oh, and that 6.5 Swede sounds interesting... I may have to look into one!  I'm still shooting my trusty '06. :)

Easy on the shoulder even with heavy for caliber bullets. Shoots flatter than the '06 but you are limited to <160grn bullets.

So far, nothing for me.  I've seen almost 2 dozen antelope and a 3x4 muley in the parking lot at work, but nothing legally shootable.

I'm going to put my ignorance on public display with this one:

from what I can tell, there aren't any doe tags available in unit 39.  Is that correct?  I ask because FALex and I saw 5 does on a property we've been hunting this evening.  We tried to get out ahead of them to see if perhaps a buck was leading 'em thru, but never spotted a buck.  We've been on the property numerous times and have only seen does and, since I'm after something to fill my freezer rather than mount on my wall....

Thanks all!

Mike

Unit 39 has doe tags; 1200 available most years.  You have to put in for them in April/May-ish.

In my experience with the muley around here, the buck will be following the does, not leading them.  Sometimes by a significant gap.

Thanks Novice!

Farlo-

The way the does were acting trends to support that the buck was following.  They kept watching down the draw they'd come up as if they were waiting for something.  Unfortunately, the light was failing and we couldn't see anything down in the draw.

They'll do that sometimes if they're getting pressure from both ends, too.  Unless you are certain that you weren't busted and were alone out there.

Phew, hardest I've had to work for a doe in a long time.  6.5 swede again; dropped her like a sack of concrete.  Not fat layer on her to speak of, which is fairly odd.
