A couple shotgun questions
«

Got a couple shotgun-related questions:
1) How much does barrel porting really affect the muzzle flip/recoil? I handled a Mossberg 500 yesterday, and noticed the barrel was ported a few inches short of the muzzle (28" barrel). It seems to me in my nowhere-near-infinite internal ballistics wisdom (read as: total ignorance
) that the low pressure of a shotgun round plus the long barrel for it to burn would make porting on a 28" barrel most effective at making the thing even louder to the shooter/bystanders than it already is. Anyone got personal experience? Teh interwebs don't seem to have a consensus on this one.
2) Is a thumbhole stock on a shotgun a good idea? I wonder about the recoil hurting the joint between the thumb and index finger.
Thanks in advance for your answers, folks.

There are many variables involved in recoil, but porting does reduce felt recoil some. How much, depends on variables, like weight of the power charge, weight and type of shot, or slug, gauge, etc...

Yea...what he said. Porting the barrel will only help with muzzle rise and won't do a thing for recoil. Shoot low recoil ammo and there are also other ways of holding the shotgun to reduce it.
Adios,

For a pump, look into a mossberg 835- Barrel is ported from the factory and it can shoot 2.75 to 3.5" loads. I really, really, like mine. (and I've owned alot of shotguns)
Pistol grip, I don't have input on that one- It's a personal preference thing imho.
I also have a mossberg 930 auto, which has ran flawlessly for a few hundred rds so far.

+1... ditch the pump gun and get an auto. I prefer a pistol grip on mine, but that's more of a personal thing. I've never cared for the cant you have to put your wrist through on a traditional stock.
In my opinion, pump guns are useful when in a pistol grip configuration with an 18.5 inch or shorter barrel for home defense or backpacking. A semiauto will be much easier on your shoulder and hand.
