Computer help
« on: September 13, 2011, 05:30:04 PM »
The fan on my laptop went out, and it is under warranty so I will be sending it back to HP.

Problem is that I need to back up everything that on the hard drive, but I am unable to turn on the laptop longer then about 15-20 sec before it auto shuts off to protect its self from over heating.

I was told the geek squad at best buy could do this a quick glance says its around $150.

Is there any other options other then best buy that you guys would trust to save all your important family pics and documents?

You can pull your hard drive and then use one of these http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3516746&CatId=2785 to move info to another computer.

Its easy to pull your drive and slave to another machine.
I would suggest sending in the LT without the hard drive. They don't need it.
If you really want your docs backed up, I can help ya out with that.

It's easy. Just a #1 Philips head screwdriver and usually 2 screws.
There is an emblem next to each screw for a hard drive. It looks like a Cylinder with a lid.
If you want, drop me a line and I can meet you somewhere and pop it out for ya.

I'd offer to help ya install the fan, but it takes me about an hour and tons of tiny parts that can be lost or broken... If its free for warranty work, take advantage of it!

ok next question would be once the HD is out...

Do I simply put the HD into the dock and plug into another computer and drag and drop the files onto the computer?

Pretty much.  It will show up as another drive on your system when you open "my computer".

It helps to know where to look too...
Most of the data you want is most likely in your profile.
