My Ruger LCR bites my hand pretty good.  I am not even recoil sensitive. I fire S&W 460 loads out of a 5" barrel and feel ok. I have fired a 2.5" Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull and felt ok.  I fire that little polymer snubby and I say oww..

However, I have noticed the Hornady XTP 38spl loads fire very smoothly for some reason.  If you take an LCR to the range for a test, try the Hornady XTP loads.  I found them to be very gentle and smooth shooting.  They are also a great defense round.  I dunno, but I almost hate shooting any else than my Hornadys out of my LCR  and carry an LCR with Hornady XTPs everywhere I go.  I'm not sure why, but they don't produce the jerky, pulverizing recoil I feel with my plinking ammo.  Maybe Corbons are a good choice as well.

If your wife cannot handle the M&P9c, has she ever considered a full size M&P9?  I carry one everywhere I go and use an IWB CompTac Minotaur holster..  It is very comfortable to carry and it is a very gentle and accurate gun to shoot.   My theory is, if you can carry an M&9c, you can carry an M&P9 too.

You can always go the .380 route if she just cannot take it..

wow....really, my WIFE has a LCR and really likes to shoot it, we also put it into the hands of many female students and they like it better than alot of alum or steel frame small revo's. Load choice is critical. But my wife IS a big time shooter and compete's with a Glock 17 on a regular basis.
She must be pretty tough..... ;D

I've noticed that mine hurts to shoot in the winter with cold hands, but summer time it's alot of fun.

Ruger is making an LCR in a 8 shot 22LR now.  That looked like it would be a neat little gun.  In 22 Mag it would be a nasty little hand full to empty into an late night intruder.  ;)

When we shopped, my wife found the Sig 226 to be optimum. She has very small hands, and the Sig fit perfectly. I even find it comfortable to hold. I can tell the difference from it and other pistols we have.

At this point I can't resist the pun: It is Sig-nificantly better than others. ;-)

The big answer is, it depends...

First thing a gun should be is: Comfortable in the hand.

2nd thing a gun should be is: Can you shoot it comfortably.

The 1st one is how 99% of the people buy a gun, because that's easy to do. the 2nd item is the reason used guns can be had for cheap.

Personally Sigs have more perceived recoil to me because the bore is higher on the gun that other guns of their nature, and yes I've owned and shot Sigs.

But that's just my opinion.   ;D

Interesting observation. I'm curious as to what model you were using.

My wife has said nothing about adverse recoil. We did get her the 9mm model. Until we get settled again and I can set up the reloading shop, we have been feeding it 115 gr JHP factory loads.

It seems to have much less recoil than my .45 230gr JHP.

Back in the day, I was pretty much a wheel gunner only. My favorite was a S&W 629 with a 8 3/8 in bbl. I would hang paper and iron for it at 50 & 100 yards. Accuracy loads were near max. H110 pushing a 240gr JHC @ 1450 fps.

Back then, my reach gun was a Rem 700 .458 Rem Mag. This was from before the accountants destroyed the production lines.

I doubt I would contribute to the used market based on recoil. Those are two guns I miss the most.
