Etching with a home made machine.

I’m making an etching machine to etch some barrels and put some serial numbers on some parts I made and I’m posting this info if anyone needs to mark a firearm.

That's pretty cool, I'm going to have to look into building one of those.

I have been testing the process with salt water and 24VDC and it works remarkably well.

Brings back memories...  I built an etcher back in jr. high that was made from a coat hanger, straw, needle, strip of tin, copper wire, wire leads, gator clips, and a 6v lantern battery.  Not something that you would use to mark firearms, but it was simple, a good learning experiment, and you could at least put your name on most metal objects with it.  I should build another one just to get back into the swing of things, document it, and then step up to a real one like above.

ETA:  It was similar to THIS ONE, but slightly heavier-duty.

Great post J Mack!

I used some vinyl letters leftover from another project for the masking and some old T-shirt material for the pad. Like I said it was just a test with some items I had on hand but I was impressed with the results.
