"Best" Commercial 308
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:34:25 PM »
Looking for 308/7.62 that is quality ammo but not necessarily match ammo.  At $1 per round the match stuff is nice but are there alternatives that are "good enough" to get trigger time without expending the funds on match ammo?  1" to 2" groups out of quality guns is "good enough"

I know reload but if you don't have time to shoot there is less time if you try to reload.

I have been happy with the HSM A-max stuff I have shot.  Since you are in the same neck of the woods as Sheepdog I would give his stuff a try.

Plus one for Sheepdog but I was assuming he was looking for something less than $1.00 ea
Does Sheepdog sell any other 308 ammo than this? http://www.sheepdogammo.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=36&product_id=65

Since you asking about non match ammo I would say pmc isn't bad and neither is the federal blue box. With 308 though your always gonna be looking at 75 cents to a dollar a round. The cheap steel cased stuff at cabelS isn't great and I never shot it for groups but it's cheap

Buy an assortment and see what your rifle likes.  My competition AR shot the Ulyanovsk (cheapest .223 you can buy) better than anything else except Federal XM193.  You might be surprised.

Another thing I consider when looking for “trigger time ammo” is a likeness to my main ammo.
For instance my .308’s have 1:11 or faster twist barrels and I shoot 175GR SMK’s or the longer 168GR Barnes and Berger bullets primarily and a generic 175GR FMJBT to practice so I stay away from the 150 GR or lighter bullets that are found on the surplus 7.62X51 ammo

Maybe the Hornady steel cases stuff?  The 5.56 steel case in 75gr is the heat.

What a great resource.  The missing link is what is DAG, MEN and Radway Green and is it good quality ammunition.  Should one stay away from the Portugese and Turkish ammo?  I use to shoot Winchetser white box and it shot "ok" and was quality product.  I would assume that the Federal stuff would be as well as Pri Partizan match as stated above.  Pricing ranges from $.40 to $1.00 per round.  For $1 per round might as well get Federal Gold Match ammo.

This is a handy reference as far as pricing goes;
