Help I bought a GPS and messed up the install
« on: September 04, 2011, 01:27:20 AM »
Hi all. I was wondering if any of you computer savvy folks could help me out. I bought a GPS for my truck. The first thing I did was to charge the battery by plugging it in to my computer with a USB Cable as the manual stated. When I did this the "found new hardware wizard started". I stopped the install and let the battery charge. Later I was playing with the unit and plugged it in a second time. Again it started the "found new hardware wizard". This time I canceled the wizard. Later I needed to go the the Garmin site and look for updated maps. I plugged the unit in as instructed and the web/site could not find the device to down load to. Now I think I have messed up because I didn't let the wizard install and it no longer will bring up the "found new hardware wizard". I feel stupid for screwing things up. Does anyone have any suggestions.

I'm guessing windows XP? Try rebooting your computer - or turn your computer off for 1 min and turn it back on - your USB may be locked up.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried that, but with no success. Your right with the XP notion. It acts like enough of the program has installed to make the machine think that it is working fine. I have looked into my control panel then under performance and maintenance I see a systems tab that gives me all the hardware listed under device manager. Before I was able to stop the second download I saw that it had the words installing USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE. In the device manager I mentioned, I see under Universal Serial Buss Controllers, a listing for USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE. I guess I wonder if that is where the information is stored or do I need to look else where? I wonder if that listing is there because of the partial download or is it always present and a part of my system.

USB mass storage devices just means its reading as a flash drive, which the gps may or may not do. I doubt the gps reads map files in this way.( some gps's do it this way, but because you said the website was trying to detect device, not just download a file to harddrive/storage device probly not yours) You need to get driver software froma cd or download from gps website for pc to recognize gps. When you got the wizard prompts, thats just windows attempt to install generic driver which would do nothing but hurt.

what did you get?

I just picked up a dakota 20 & topo for this falls hunting.

I also have a nuvi500 for the truck.

when you do a driver update it does say "don't unplug device" ect or it may become unusable & need to be returned to garmin for fix.  as long as that was not going on you should be OK.  I'd try plugging it into a different usb port or even a different comp.
I can't hear you over the sound of my own awesomeness.

You don't need the CD for drivers.
I would go here:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp
...scroll to the bottom to download/install the Garmin USB drivers.
Restart.
Plug in your GPS.
If the 'found new hardware' wizard doesn't automatically pop up, then:  Start > Control Panel > Add Hardware.  Try 'Let Windows find drivers automatically', and if that doesn't work, you'll have to browse to where the drivers were installed.  If you get to that point and can't find them, check back here.

Thanks all. I was able to talk to a friend who helped me out and now I have it installed. I was right the Mass Storage unit was the driver I needed to delete.  Garmin support also sent a list of things to do to get the two units talking together but at this point no luck. I will keep plugging away. This thing will not whip this old dog.
